Noob question

Hey guys, first post here. I am trying to figure out how to break up clips in the project window into smaller chunks. I always import a 1 hour video and then end up having to just edit it down in the timeline.

Do I have to capture it in smaller bits or is there a way to cut it down before it hits the timeline?

Much Thanks!

It's a feature called Scene Detect, which appears as a checkbox in the capture window. This detects whenever you starts recording and break it up into individual takes. You must have configure the Date and Time function on your camera for this to work. And in Premiere it doesn't work at all with HDV footage. I recommend using HDVsplit for that, it's free.

if your using premier use the cut tool! its a tool. just scrol on the timeline and choose what you want and cut the areas

Similar to scene detect but..

Use the feature called batch capture. It allows you to set your in and out points and then log them to your browser window. once you have 'logged' your whole tape you can go into your browser window and tell it to 'Batch Capture' and it will capture just those clips automatically. Very helpful for long clips. Sorry I don't have premiere in front of me right now so I wouldn't be able to tell you the exact process.

Bad advice in my opinion.

Load the clip in the Source Monitor and use IN and OUT marks. ("I" or "O")

Drag or Insert/Overlay to the timeline ( "," or ".")

The function of the Razor Tool is , splitting a clip.

I'm curious about your reasoning for this. I understand why you'd want to establish the correct in and out points of a clip in the source monitor, but if, like LucidDream, you have a clip that's an hour long it really won't work. I've used the razor tool to split clips for years without problems.

Now I also understand that capturing a whole tape as a single clip ain't the best way to work either, but what's a body to do when he's already captured his tape in this manner?

Everyone to whatever works for them but...to me the timeline (sequence) is the place to "assemble" the edit and the Source and Program Monitors are used as per their descriptive names.

An hour long tape edited from the Source Monitor definitely works, is faster and permits frame accuracy. ie it shows every frame allowing an IN and an Out point to be quickly and precisely established and the clip can be quickly inserted or overlayed to the timeline (Program Monitor). Short steps are Play>Mark IN> Play> Mark OUT>Insert/Overlay. (All quickly done from the keyboard)

The timeline method does not easily allow frame accuracy because it does not zoom into show each and every frame therefore the Razor Tool is a bit of a stab in the dark at the cut point. The Razor shortcut key would be more precise but thats a hassle if there are clips on tracks above or below.

If the razor tool is used in the timeline, the "unwanted footage" then needs to be (ripple) deleted and hence a lot more mouse /key strokes and shuffling and managing of the clips. Slower by far.

I certainly use the Razor tool and its shortcut but only for splitting a clip to maybe apply different FX to each part of the split for example.

Different strokes for different folks.
