noob photog/adapter question

Hi guys,

I'm a complete novice in terms of still photography. I need to buy a camera and lenses that I can use with a DOF adapter.

My first choice is:

My questions are: can I use these lenses w/the camera and a DOF adapter.

http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Camera-Lenses/1922/AF-NIKKOR-28mm-f/2.8D.html

The compatible mount and lens types (F-bayonet mount, D type, AF-S, VR lens) have me totally screwed up.

I understand the different lens sizes and F-stops; it's the compatibility issues that confuse me.

Thanks guys.

You can mount them and have automatic exposure, but you won't be able to autofocus with those lenses on the D40. The D40 doesn't have an internal focus motor so you need a camera with a focus motor. The D80 is the step up from D40 and that will give you AF with those lenses.

Some nikon lenses have an internal focus motor (SWM - silent wave motor). These lenses will have "AF-S" in theitr title. For example: "Nikkor AF-S 18-70mm f3.5-5.6".

D-type means that the lens doesn't have a focus motr.
AF-S means that it has a focus motor.
VR means that it has an electronic device that compensates the shaking of the photographer and thus reducing motion blur when using long shutter speeds.

Edit: both of those lenses will work on a 35mm adapter with a nikon mount.

If you meant MOTION PICTURES then do a search. It has been beaten to death in some threads. You will get more answers that way.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

The D80 is a tad $$$.

I'm taking a photog class this summer and will purchase the SGpro late next month. I basically needed something that I can use interchangeably.

Again, all the Nikon terminology had me confused with figuring out what was best suited for me.

The link was most helpful; thanx.

First off this a video forum, second why would you want to use an SGpro with a 35mm camera?

Am I fried by this time or is jkc123 lurking the wrong forum?

LOL

OK; Douglas.

I currently have a Dvx100. I'm taking a photog class to become more familiar with the aspects of photography; therefore I need a suitable still camera.

I will purchase the SGpro within the next few weeks.

I need a still camera with lenses that I can use with the SGpro.

Make sense or did I confuse everyone?

He just wants lenses that he can use with his SGPro and his still camera. I think.

Do yourself a favor and buy an old film camera. Your shots will be more intentional and you'll have better lens options for your DOF adapter. You'll be disappointed with your AF lenses - the servo will be awesome, and the focus ring will have a depressingly short throw. Plus you won't have to deal with the 1.5x crop factor of the dSLR sensor so your 28mm wide angle will actually be a wide angle, not an awkward 42mm.

get a second hand nikon fg20. cheap and good. then get some second hand manual nikon AI or AIS lenses. that's what i've got :D also got the sgpro!

Exactly.

Thanks again guys. I appreciate the input.

IMHO often times in our dvxuser community folks are a little too quick to dismiss the "newbies" and tell someone "do a search, it's been discussed plenty".

Granted, often times it's warrented (i.e. questions about the "rattle in the camera when it's turned off") and other times not so much.

But, it's like telling someone to F-off. I mean, if I can write a few lines telling someone to do a search then I can answer a question or at least post a link.

Then again, what do I know. I'm just a noob.

i have a used D200, grab an older D50 to start you can find one cheap. It is almost as small as the D40 but you can use all nikon lenses with it. If you have SD cards its great, if you have CF cards look at a D70. Buy a used body and better glass.

Like you said, newbies don't get as mush attention because veterans know that there is nothing for them in those threads.

That is guy it is up to the newbie to do a research in threads were the pros hang out.

I went with Nikons because I own some old cameras and lenses. I personally use my old NIKON F4 to check what lens I want use for a shot(because it is full frame 24X36mm). I use a D70 for digital stills.

You have the option since you don't have a camera to go for any brand. Nikon is a good option because they haven't change the mount since the beginning.

This has been beaten to death before and there is wealth of information out there. DO A SEACH!!!!

The other day I did a SEACH at the BEACH for a PEACH, to try to REACH my own NICHE, maybe creatively BREACH, but in the end I just LEACHED off my old favorite TEACH, Mr. CREACH.
