Noob in the dvd realm.

So I have been shooting movies, working with cameras, editing, dealing with sound and lights for a while now. I have dappled in a lot of areas and feel generally able to deal with a lot of a different aspects of film. I have neglected dvd output and compression techniques completely. My knowledge extends as far as "export to quicktime" pull up idvd and call it a day.

What is a good dvd program to start learning that might be considered industry standard? What kind of things should I pay attention to when I need to put a finished product onto dvd? Any beginners tips would be helpful
