Noob After effects problem!

Right i am TOTALLY brand new to after effects, i have used premiere for ages, but obvioulsy want more.... so decided to use after effects as well!

So i notice when i import a video file in to the timeline, it only plays (and exports) the video actually visible on the timline, this is really annoying as i wish to create an old film effect for a whole movie file, so just wondering is there a way around this?

Read AE's help about "Changing composition duration".

Actually you should look on the menu for a option that is called composition duration
 
Do you know where I could get After Effects, like free and all?? because I still use Premiere 6.0, I would like to try out After Effects.
