non-english keyboard bindings

I'm working my way hrough the great tutorial at http://www.macprovideo.com/hub/final-cut/final-cut-pro-x-a-structured-workflow
(Finaly someone taking you through the intended workflow instead of listing features or explaining buttons.)

However I'm having a hard time working through the important keyboard shortcuts as they seem to be completely different on my German keyboard.
The editor for keyboard shortcuts is nice but I can't find the equivalent functions and thus the shortcuts I have to use because I can only search for the translation of each function. (and I have no clue how most of them got translated. That's not exactly a 1:1 matching.)

I guess [ + ] are I+O on the German layout.
But where are Shift+/ "select the edit point for a roll edit"
as well as < and >?

I had a slightly similar issue trying to type german text using an English keyboard, but Apple thought of this

On your mac go to System pref

- then select "language and text"
- then onto "input sources"

all the flags of the world appear and I guess German will be already selected, find the UK flag and tick it as well

Now close down system pref -top right of your screen (toolbar) you will see your countries flag beside the day and date, click on the flag and the other countries you selected will appear, click on the Uk flag and your keyboard will adapt accordingly

I'd rather try to learn the key-bindings as they are on my German keyboard instead of switching languages between editing and typing titles/tags/filenames/... .
I got the hang on editing using C, I O , . and the cursor keys.
Same as I do with Objective C despite the ever-present [ and ] characters being hard to reach and not labeled on the German Apple keyboard.
Only thing missing is a shortcut to trim the end/start of the current clip to the timeline-position instead of selecting the left side of the next transition, loosing the current position in the timeline, trimming that by keyboard until I think I have again reach the position I just lost.
