Noisy Dual G5 problems

I am looking at purchasing a G5 dual processor for editing Final Cut 4 for the doco I am shooting with my DVX100a.
My concern is the noise problems I have heard with the dual G5s.
What noise has anyone noticed in
The audio? (Noise in the audio is of a real concern!)
Screeching/beeping coming from the power supply?
Noisy fans going full bore (somebody described it like a boeing taking off.)
In a quiet environment I am concerned about the noise which would be noticeable without masking it with aircon/office noise. Editing is fun enough without extraneous noise
Any info websites etc I would be grateful before my next big purchase.

Re: Noisy Dual G5 problems

I have a single processor 1.8, which I believe has the same fan system as the dual, and I would say that the Mac is way quieter than my PC next to it. On a very rare occasion I have noticed (like when I am capturing or rendering) something inside is working harder because it gets slightly louder. But overall, I see the G5 as a very quiet machine. So I would say unless you have some sort of medical problem that makes you twitch when you hear a slight fan noise, you should have no problems with this computer.

Re: Noisy Dual G5 problems

G5 is by far quieter than the Power Mac G4 which Apple totally goofed on. I have G4 1.4 dual which is by far twice as loud as a G5 2.0 dual. I heard of noise in the audio, check:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86655
but I don't think the problems were as widespread as them seemed.

They perfected the cooling of the G5 as well. A dual G5 will run around 100F, my Dual G4 hovers around 116F, it was 136F before I made many mods to the case.

Re: Noisy Dual G5 problems

I have the dual 2ghz G5, and haven't noticed any problems. Sometimes on startup the fans will kick in and surge for a few seconds, but 99% of the time, it just has a nice quiet "purr" down there... you can't even notice it, as it's quieter than any other macs i've had.

No experience with the internal audio issue... i run all mine through a digi001 through firewire.

Re: Noisy Dual G5 problems

I have heard of the audio problems but like the last user said it isn't as widespread. Now i have witnessed the fans at full force at the Apple Store. The Dual 2.0GHz G5 wouldn't wake from sleep and the fans were going at full force and really oud. This was due to the system kernel panicking. I have heard of others that experienced this problem but again I don't think this was as widespread either. The G5 is really quiet at regular operation and even when its running a processor intensive task, this is in comparison to my Dual 1.0 GHz G4 that was nicknamed the "wind tunnel" G4 due to it being the loudest Power M ac by far.

Now for my advice the last update came to the G5 in November 2003, they upgraded the single 1.8 G5 to a dual 1.8. Now on June 28 Apple will hold their World Wide Developers Conference where they update products and release new ones. Steve Jobs promised a 3Ghz G5 in a year, he made this promise at last years Conference. So I would wait to see what comes out, and even if you don't want one of the new models you could get the previous model for a great price as Apple will be clearing out what they have left of them. I plan on waiting til then to make my decision also.

My dual G5 whispers compared to my dual G4. I just read about some rumours of G5 shortages meaning more than likely the new ones will be anounced very soon.
