NOISE when film transfer into FPC

I'm Using a Sony HDR-HC1.

When I run low-light film scenes in the camera or in

i-movie everything (color, noise, etc) looks fine.

i've been using i-movie to transfer the film from my camera to fcp.

once in fcp the low light scenes get a lot of noise and color distortion that

wasn't there in i movie or in the camera.

any ideas of the cause or suggestions how to avoid this?

iMovie HD uses an Apple Intermediate Codec to handle HD footage.

It is typically not a good idea to use iMovie as an import tool. iMovie captures using DV Stream with no timecode. You can't go back and recapture the material at a later date, like you can in FCP. You can use FCP log and capture to import your tape in large chunks. Run Detect DV Start/Stop Detect, and FCP will place markers at the start/stop point of each clip. These markers can then be used to break the media file into subclips.
