Looking to shot a small clip on small penguins - my only problem is they only come out at night. does anyone have any suggestions towards doing this? i have a lighting kit, but obviosly out there i cant power it. looking at onboard lights but they seem to weak.
You could use a 100W battery powered halogen lamp like the Sachtler Reporter 100. It is pretty large for on-camera use, but it has a lot of power. You'd also need a 12V battery source like a belt pack.
Other than that I could imagine you use a consumer camcorder like the Sony PC100 which has infrared nightvision. I read an article recently by someone who built an on-board infrared lamp from a dozen IR-LEDs and used the PC100E to film in total darkness. He said the IR-lamp had a range of 15-20 meters. The downside is you'll only get B/W pictures.
