No video on DVD when using Toast 7

I just bought Toast 7 Titanium today. I usually author dvd's with Adobe Encore because I like Main Concept's encoder, but my PC is getting old and strange things have been happening lately.

Anyway, I tried to make a DVD and it pops out with just audio, no video (the disc plays in a regular DVD player like it was an audio CD). I tried self contained and non self contained movies when exporting the FCP project. Same thing. Does anyone know what the problem is?

I know you're thinking I should just use iDVD, but I don't like the way iDVD's encoder works. And I've always thought it was a crock that you can't add chapter's in iDVD, therefore, if you use Compressor, you'll get no chapters.
So I absolutely refuse to buy Studio Pro on principle because besides being able to create chapter markers, I don't need anything "Pro" from that application. But don't get me started on that one. Needless to say, I'm still using FCP 4.5.

PS. The media settings are for DVD Video 7Mb VBR/Max BR 8Mb/reencoding (does that mean 2 Pass?)

Hard to say what is keeping you from successfully burning your dvd with Toast 7. You say you don't want to use Compressor because you can't keep your Chapter markers? If you create the Chapter Markers (in FCP timeline, M key 2 times and Set as Chapter Marker) then when you are ready to export go to Export Using Compressor. Depending on the length and quality you want, pick the appropriate setting (90 min of video = 90 minute high quality 2 pass - in compressor) also don't forget to encode the audio using A.pac. (NOTE: 2-Pass VBR will take longer to compress) When the encoding is done I'm not sure what you are doing at that point...

Are you using Toast 7 to author the DVD? I've never used Toast before (to Author DVD's) but it might be worth it to use iDVD though I've never used iDVD before so I don't know if iDVD will be able to accept the already compressor compressed video/audio. I believe you should be able to, in Toast, to set chapter markers of some kind, if the chapter markers, for some reason, didn't make it over from FCP. Then you should burn the files as a DVD-Rom in Toast. The final files that make up the DVD will be a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS files.

sorry if that didn't help. Maybe more specifics could help us help you.

thank you.I will try the Video_TS solution. I did use the Compressor MPEG2 2 pass high quality encode. The DVD works, but I'm not impressed with the picture quality after making the DVD in Toast, which did accept the chapter markers nicely, but Toast still encoded the video file. I think that might be why I see a lot of noise around the edges of moving figures. BTW, I did try to use iDVD to make a DVD just to check the picture quality of the Compressor-made file, but iDVD wouldn't even accept the file.
Thanks again, that DVD-Rom idea sounds good and I never would have thought of it!

I tried burning the Compressor files to a DVD-ROM in Toast and it didn't turn them into TS files. It just burned them as .aiff and .m2t just as if I was copying them.

The VIDEO_TS and/or AUDIO_TS files are normally created by the DVD authoring program. Upon completing your design of the DVD you "Build" (at least that is what it is called in DVD Studio Pro) the DVD. This means it takes all your resources - the AIFF and .m2v files and/or interface graphics (if you used any) and compiles them into a neat package, resulting in a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders (the AUDIO_TS folder being empty) These files are what the DVD player reads in order to make it all work. DVD players can not read AIFF or .m2v files in the format you are trying to create.

From what I understand, Toast has capabilities of 'authoring' very simple DVD's. Giving you options to make chapters and simple interface design. Try using this feature (read the Toast manual). See what happens and let me know what happens.

Good luck!

Thanks, I will try it. I also found out the reason I can't get any video. There's a bug with Toast 7 that makes you lose all video footage on the DVD if you made Chapter points in FCP or iMovie. I exported the movie from Final Cut with no chapters & the DVD works fine. Only thing is, I had to settle on placing a chapter point every 3 minutes instead of where I wanted them to go. I must say though, I was pleased with the picture quality of the video.
Thank you ian.
