"Yoou are allowed one battery in cargo, aka luggage and cases with gear in them, a singular battery, it must be attached to the camera, or recorder. All else has to be in the carry on. In your carry on you can have up to 25 grams of Lithium Ion. In each of the HVX batteries you have about 2 1/2 grams."

Jan, I may be wrong, but I've been on all three sites and according to all three, as of 1/1/2008:

1) you may not have any batteries in your checked luggage

2) you may have one battery in the camera

3) you may have a maximum of two spare batteries in your carry-on (separated in bags)

4) the gram exemption has been removed... there is no break for small batteries anymore... it doesn't matter what their size is, it's a max of two. They do mention a max, and warned that some laptops batteries exceed this and will not be allowed.

They may not have spooled up on this at the airports yet, but they will any day now, just like they did with the liquids. It went into effect, but it was a while before they actually started enforcing it at the airports...

Man there are sooo many changes!!!!

Can someone enlighten me?

I flew from NY to FL a few months ago (on Delta) and called the airline and asked them straight out if camcorder batteries were OK to check or carry on. They said it was fine and it was.

They can't possibly deny people's batteries in luggage. That makes NO sense.

Where are you getting this information from?

.

yeah I had a problem last time I traveled with my HVX....but i think they were more pissed about the camera, 2 firestores, shotgun mic, and cables all over.....good thing im not middle eastern looking or for sure I would have gotten the body cavity search, instead of just the threat :) Seriously I think the ruling applies more to the big batteries like the anton bauers etc. your HVX battery isnt gonna mean a hill of beans. And if you are headed through Dallas love field, make sure you say hi to the nice men in security and tell them before you go through the xray that the bag contains professional camera equipment and needs a hand inspection....save yourself the headache of being surrounded and taken into a small room with bright lights

If you read the details of the US dept of Transportation press release you linked to you'll see they say:

"Common consumer electronics such as travel cameras, cell phones,
and most laptop computers are still allowed in carry-on and checked luggage."

They then go on to say:

"However, the rule limits individuals to bringing only two extended-life spare rechargeable lithium batteries*,
such as laptop and professional audio/video/camera equipment lithium batteries in carry-on baggage."

Forget the fact that they say 'professional camera equipment' and look at the footnote.
The footnote defines what is limited - lithium batteries with more than 8 grams of lithium per battery (and no more than 25g).

As stated above, the HVX batteries have roughly 2.5 grams of lithium per.
So there should be no problem in taking them in your carry on or checked luggage.
But, as with anything, I would call any airline in advance if you have any doubts or quetions.

I just flew to Panama recently with 8 batteries in my suitcase and one in the carry on with the camera and no one even looked at my bags.
Ran them through the xray and that was it.
But, your mileage may vary.

i've flown twice since this spare battery thing started a few months ago. in my carry on bag is my hvx w/battery and then 4 extra batteries. and my bag always gets searched cause of all the random weird stuff in it(pb&j sandwich, batteries, clif bars, jelly beans, firestore, cables, lenses...) and on one flight i had to go back through security(flight re-route), so i've been thouroughly checked numerous times and its never been an issue of having multiple batteries. and my checked baggage is usually 3 bescor batteries, 1 light and 1 charger.

I just flew Delta last week out of Toronto. Full set of gear. (Betacam to boot!) Camera plus 2 batteries as second carry on. Atleast 3 other antons stowed away. Not even a boo. I say ignore those insane rules and make sure that you're just making it through to security by the skin of your teeth and holding up other passengers in the process. The possibility of alot of people missing a flight seemed to speed things up a bit.
