No Sound

I bought a Oktava MK-12 from Trew Audio Last Year in January. We set it up today and get nothing when we pluged it in. XLR to Amp.

Any ideas on why this is.

Thanks
John

Condenser mics need to be powered... not all mic connections provide this power. In the case of the Oktava (and 95% of the other condenser mics out there) phantom power (+48v) is required to run the mic. The DVX provides this at the outputs... most pro gear has phantom power on tap, but not all has it... bwest is correct... check this first.

Similar problem: I rented a mic today for a shoot tomorrow. They didn't include a power supply with the mic. I hooked up the mic to the Panasonic DVX100 and turned on the power supply from the DVX100, but it gets no sound. I found the mic's user guide on the internet, and it says "Connect the power-supply output to a balanced-line microphone input supplying 11 to 52 Vdc simpled (phantom) power...There will be no battery drain as long as the simplex voltage exceeds 15 volts." So I'm guessing the problem is that the XLR cable coming out of the DXV100 needs to hook up to the mic's power supply unit and that unit should hook up to the mic. In other words, can't connect directly from camera to mic. Does that sound famililar to anyone? But why would the rental studio fail to give me the power supply unit? Maybe it's not necessary if you're going through a mixer??? Any advice is appreciated. Tomorrow is Sunday and probably noone will be available at the rental studio. I don't have an external power supply or audio mixer. SOL? Guess my fallback is a handheld dynamic coil mic left over from the college rock star career....

The DVX can provide phantom power on the XLR input jacks. However, you have to switch it on. Look at the switches that are covered by the LCD. ALSO check the line/mic switches on the front of the camera near the XLR jacks. With a mic directly connected to the DVX, make sure these switches are set for 'mic'.

Anomaly, what make/model mic are you trying to connect up?

you will definitely need power supply ( or phantom to bias adaptor ) as all electret mics
why they didn't give you one ?
if they changed the plug to to mini jack(original taf-3 mini xlr) it may be becouse semipro equipment has powered microphone inputs ( 3v ) to hook electret mics directly , or just forgot to include the unit.
also some people like me dont use cables any more and i hook these mics ( i have few AT AND SANKENS)directly to wireless transmitters when i mount these on the set ( a bit expencive but save time running cables and get bazzes coming from high voltage)
dont try to connect the mic directly if you like i t survive , 48 will fry the mic :-)

I haven't used that particular mic but if it's like similar ones I've used, what they are calling a power supply is really part of the mic. If the rental place didn't provide it, I think they screwed up. You said you hooked the mic to your DVX. How did you do that? It looks like the connector that meant to connect between the microphone and the power supply is smaller than a standard XLR connector. The power supply has the XLR connector.
