no sound track in dv-avi footage captured

i am not able to get Sony Vegas 9e to read the sound from captured dv-avi files from sd footage captured in movie maker. the entire video and sound track appears in virtual dub, but not vegas...a sound track doenst appear at all. what am i doing wrong? hd appears with video and audio for hdv and avchd captured in cineform neoscene 4..but something must be changed in my settings? video editing is far more complex that photoshop. bill

Not sure, but it might have something to do with Type-1 or Type-2 DV-AVI files . I think newer versions of Windows Movie Maker export Type-1

IIRC, In type-1 , the audio & video are interleaved in the same stream , so some applications cannot access the audio. In type-2 the A/V data is stored split up and this causes fewer headaches

Vegas uses the VFW (video for windows) system so Type-2 would be more compatible. If you search there are Type-1 to Type-2 converters, but I would use another capture utility like WinDV

If you use a utility called gspot , it can tell you if you have type-1 or type-2

What happens if you capture with WinDV or Vegas ?

thanks again pdr...well i had copied from a canon xha1 in february of this year just before i purchased cineform ..all the dv avi files in windows movie maker. i wanted to edit this stuff..which was not broken into segments like cineform does, but a long hour segment...no sound..but shot at 29. fps. i simply wanted to get this into vegas..but having difficulty..shows video stream, but no audio stream indicating there is a decompression code that is not read? Like you stated.

thanks again for your willingness to help a newbie. i will hopefully be able to pass on information to others on the site as i gain skills and reciprocate. any thoughts on importing into vegas by capturing in another codec the existing files i have? i tried to convert to cineform file and it isnt recognized even in cineform..video or audio. yet virtual dub plays both sound and video. thanks again pdr...

thanks i will try this out. the first conversions i did with were old tapes taken from 2000 to 2006. everything from there was done with cineform in hdv...and of course no issues. i captured in a two week period with the canon xha1, from old tapes done in old cameras. thanks again pdr

pdr...i tried the conversion...and it successfully worked for about half of the 1 hour video capture each. half the sound is okay, the other half is peaked and stays peaked ..a loud pitched noise...am trying to find out what happened. bill

Can you verify that audio was ok in the other 1/2 that didn't work? (e.g. do they report audio in vdub, and is it "normal" audio) ? or were they corrupt to begin with?

I'm not sure what's going on , but you could try another DV Type 1=>2 converter

i tried to convert to cineform file and it isnt recognized even in cineform..video or audio. yet virtual dub plays both sound and video.

Also, I don't understand why you can't convert these to cineform or uncompressed (or lossless compression like lagarith or huffyuv) in vdub (since they are decoded properly both audio & video , it should pass that along to whatever you export from vdub).

well heres the rub. audio fine in all the dv avi files copied in windows media in feb. distored majorly in the transfer in half the sections

cineform doenst recognize my dv avi files...go figure on that ...i will put in a request to cineform to explain why. bill

So are you saying all the DV-AVI files are fine, just 1/2 of them get distorted when you process them through the DV type converter? or are you saying in the firewire transfer (ie. 1/2 are bad and not salvageable)

I'm using a different version than you, but I can access cineform through vdub

Are they ok in vdub? If so , you can use uncompressed with pcm audio to export - then at least you could salvage them

all the dv avi files are readable both video and audio on vdub. when i copied with ulead from type1 to type 2, oner hour clip for example would have half the audio normal, the other half in sections that are peaked and distorted ..full amplification in sound and a straight peaked block..then sound reappears, then back to a peak..random.

in both movie maker and vdub the sound is fine. i am just trying to get this type 1 form into vegas...and your suggestion is to open in vdub, then save as a cineform file? bill

That's exactly what I'm saying .

If vdub is decoding correctly, it will pass on to the exported file.

Also, if you are not using any vdub filters make sure you use video=>fast recompress (so you don't incur YCbCr=>RGB colorspace conversion as you recall from the other thread)

If , for some reason , you cannot access cineform from the vdub compression menu, you could use no compression (still in fast recompress mode) . This way at least you salvage the files and can use them in vegas

I am curious as to why only some of them are afflicted by that DV Type1=>2 converter. Were there any other differences between those 2 sets you can see?

no..no diffrence on the video..just the audio..and again it was strange that it worked through part of the tape, then distort for 1-10 minutes, then back to regular sound, then distort again at peak levels. i will give vdub uption a try tonight. thanks again..eventually i will actually get to really really edit. bill
