No sound man. What to do?

In an upcoming production, there won't be anyone to operate any sort of boom pole. Basically, we're looking at our options from that. Are lavaliers the only option in this situation?

Lavalieres are a great option... if you want your sound to suck.

Call around, see if you can get someone who knows what they're doing. The proper option is to get a boom pole operator in there pronto.

Modify the script so that every lead character is a little bit nuts and they all think they're "on stage" all the time, so they always talk into a handheld microphone wherever they go...

You could always ADR the entire project.

Seriously, though. Get yourself a boom op'. Lav's are handy, but they're lousy at picking up production foley. Depend entirely on lav's, and they'll break your heart.

The general thrust I agree with but there is no such thing as "production foley" and the only "foley" in filmmaking is Foley. And the last thing you want in your tracks is a bunch of non dialog.

But I completely agree with "get a sound person". Lav's are harder to do right than a boom, well at least As hard. And it's MUCH harder to improve iffy lav tracks in post than iffy boom tracks, though both can easily be show stoppers if they are BAD.
