no sound in premiere 1.5..... again

I have my sound running through an external USB sound device. I have used this device for awhile and had sound in premiere just fine. But since I installed a new supplemental hard drive (slave, not master), there's no sound in premiere (sound is just fine in other programs).

I went to menu > edit > properties > audio hardware ----- and the USB device is selected in the drop down menu. But this happened once a long long time ago and I seem to remember checking a box that solved the problem. Oh how I wish the search function worked better in dvxuser.

Let me know if you can solve the riddle.

you should be able to check "play back audio on audio hardware" under project settings then playback settings
