NO SOUND!  Is the DVX Broken?

I've got a brand new DVX100a (two weeks old, <1 hr. on it), and somehow I can't get the audio, any audio, to record. Either the camera is broken already, or I am missing something.

Here is the setup:

-On the front, both switches are set to "mic," not "line."
-Unidirectional Mic is plugged into "Input 2" XLR input and mounted on camera.
-On Ch selections, I have CH1 on "INT(L)" and CH2 on "input 2."
-next to that, I have input 1 on "off" and input 2 on "on."

Those are the correct settings, right? But no matter what I do, I can't get any audio to record. I've been playing with all sorts of setting here and there because I am new to the camera, but I don't remember doing anything to kill all audio.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Marcel

Marcel,

I don't see anything wrong with the setup you describe but you don't mention the audio level settings. That's the small dials at the lower left corner of the camera (looking from the rear). Set them to mid-range and you should be getting some audio.

Dan,

Thanks for the quick reply. The audio dials are both right in the middle and if I adjust them, it has no effect.

Marcel,

The internal mic requires the fewest settings. I believe the only controls that affect it are the channel selection switches and the level dials. So you should at least be getting something on channel 1. Do you see anything register on the audio meters?

No, nothing. I'm convinced that the thing is broken.

Even when I disconnect the external mic and use only the on-board mic, no sound at all is present.

I'll call Panasonic tomorrow.

My latest theory is that maybe this problem has something to do with me using a third party battery. I'm not sure exactly when the problem started, but I got new batteries this weekend.

The new batteries I got say 7.2v, 2000mAh...which is slightly different from the panasonic factory battery, which says 7.2v, 1600mAh. could this have anything to do with it???

Yeah, it doesn't sound good. Can't imagine it would be the battery if the rest of the cameras works fine. So the audio was working initially? I'm at a loss. As a last resort, have you tried a reset (next to shutter button)? Sorry

Yes, it was working initially.

I tried a reset, but with no luck.

Did you try to adjust the mic levels using the RECORDING SETUP;MIC ALC or MIC GAIN , to see if that had any effect ?

BigTime- I am interested to know what Panasonic tells you if you call them. I had a similar problem minutes before having to tape a piano concert. I had not changed anything on the camera either, and honestly, I messed with so many dials and buttons I couldnt begin to tell you what I did, but I got my audio back. Missed the introduction of the pianist, but all else went well. No problem since. I was only using the onboard mic, though.

Also, I have third party battery that is marked the same as you mention and I have not even opened its package yet as it looks so different than the one that came with my camera. Afraid to use it. (from Broadway Photo/Video) ???

I'll keep you posted. So far, I am 0 for 2 on calling Panasonic. First call, I talked to a guy for about 1 minute before the line got cut off. On the second call, I was hung up on before someone could answer the phone.

SafetyO, Yeah, I messed with those settings, too. No luck.

thartley, I got the batteries from Overstock.com. They look identical to the one from Panasonic, and the camera seemed to work fine with them...unless of course they are the cause of this audio malfunction.

Bah...Panasonic guy told me that problems just happen sometimes and that I need to take it in to a service center.

In other words, I now need to rent a camera for the wedding this weekend at my expense. Not a good start to my "marriage" to the DVX.

A pain in the ass, no doubt. Still, I'm sure your future experiences with the camera will outweigh this one.

Take the camera back to where you got it. Have them look at it. It's called dealer support. They should be able to diagnose the problem, and help you out any way they can. If they don't, then I don't recommend you every buy from them again.
