Dark Side of the Camera
Straight from the horses (Job's) mouth at today's notebook keynote:
"Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It's great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we're waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace." Phil chimed in with "We have the best HD movie and TV options in iTunes." Damn. As if that weren't enough to make Mac-lovin' home theater junkies cringe, Steve also commented (when asked about the dearth of HDMI in his introductions) that HDMI was "limited in resolution," and Philip Schiller elaborated by saying that "for typical computer use, DisplayPort is the connector of the future."
Blu ray - Shmoo ray.
I rented out a blu ray and it took me half a day of fiddling around - but I was still not able to play it. Despite I downloaded the newest drivers, software, updates, firmware andwhatnot.
Turned out that it is not playing because I have a professional 24" CRT monitor with component input. The support told me, that they don´t want me to watch it on that display. I have to get a crappy flatsceen with HDMI or DVI that speaks HDCP.
Yeah great!
An other nail in the Blu-Ray coffin and a major deal braker in my book.
I think it´s pretty clever of Apple to stay away from Blu-Ray till they come back down to earth and make it a restriction free format.
Many other things are in the pipeline. The chinese work on a red laser device that can handle HD on a single sided DVD - probably similar to the Red Disc development.
I can live with DVD till something better comes out.
