"no name" P2 volume missing

Looks like I've really done it this time. I read that instead of just importing P2 from the camera via FCP, I should first copy the whole "No name" P2 volume to my hard drive.
I clicked on the external drive I store files on so the icons showed up in the finder. Then
I dragged the volume from the list of drives on the left to the drive on the right. Instead of copying, the volume disappeared with a "poof" as if emptying trash. Now when I try to mount the camera it does not show up, and FCP will not import P2. However, if I turn the camera off, it does give the message it normally gives when you disconnect without ejecting first. Any idea what I did and how to correct it?

With the camera disconnected, are the clips still on the P2 card? If so, I suggest starting from scratch again. It is not necessary to copy the P2 files to HDD, you can just capture into FCP, but you might eventually want to archive the MXF to disk. You should be able to put the camera in "1394 Device" and connect to the Mac. Be sure the camera is off, and the cable is plugged in to the Mac first.

Clips are still on the card and viewable in the camera, but the camera will no longer mount to the Mac. What I need to know is what I did wrong when I tried to move the volume over to the external drive so I can try and undo it!
I'm a former PC person trying to adapt to Mac. Anybody recognize what I did ?
Why was there an "empty trash" sound? (the volume is not in there)

if 1394 mode is not working for your mac to mount the P2 card 'no name', then try USB mode.

In the camera switch it from 1394 to USB Device, then go to USB device and connect the mac to the HVX via USB.

MAKE SURE THE CARD IS IN WRITE PROTECT MODE. it needs to be to mount properly.

now see if the card mounts, then try copying the disc 'NO NAME' to your HDD

I'm new to the Mac also. Here's my process:

1. In the camera, set to "1394 Device". Turn camera off. P2 cards do not "need" to be write-protected.
2. Mac is on, FCP is off - connect 1394 cable to Mac (this dissipates static elec)
3. plug 1394 to camera, turn camera on, switch to PC mode. on the camera screen you should see 1394 Device "disconnect " change to "connect" and you should see the no name icon appear in the Mac Finder.
4. Open FCP, Capture from P2 - this is where you import your clips, or
5. you should be able to drag files from no name to any drive. be sure you get the "lastclip" file also.

couple key points: camera must be off and already set to 1394 device, FCP must off until camera is recognized by Mac.

I don't think USB mode will work with the Mac, according to the manual.

good luck

OMG...

USB mode will work ive tested it on 6 macs now. The manual just doesnt gaurantee it.
