no more film school

Re: no more film school

Jerry, sorry to hear that is your experience. I was one of the founders of a software company and the young people I hired from UCSB, MIT, CSUC, and USD were great. I agree that getting a degree in a technical field and transitioning into the film industry is a good idea.

If there are people reading this thread that are attending school that think they are wasting money then change schools. There are great schools out there and they don’t have to be expensive. There are some great community colleges out there. And, like I said in an earlier post, USC and UCLA are not necessarily the best. I went to Chico State and was able to fund a $292K documentary and spend three weeks in Russia when the tanks rolled into Estonia; the wall was coming down, and attended the Tchaikovsky piano competition. There was no way that I would have had that opportunity at a larger university and definitely no way to produce this without attending school.

My wife owns an art gallery and I am so tired of hearing “artist” whine about being broke. I don’t know why people think making money and being an artist are mutually exclusive of each other. If anyone is serious about making this a career, then having a degree is a great advantage. Don’t let people tell you otherwise.
