LOL, nobody here (except a couple people) appreciates audio. It's all cameras and lenses.
The last I checked movies are now "talkies" not silent any more. It has been shown that when the same moving images are viewed one with ok sound and the other with great sound the viewer perceives the one with great sound as being of higher resolution. If you want to improve the way your Movie is received then improve the sound.

I did spend some time in the audio area - I have to be honest, I am not a sound guy so my interest (and knowledge) of audio products are pretty much limited to what a one-man band production crew might use.

Point is - there wasn't a lack of coverage because we don't care about audio, but because we simply don't know enough to know what is new/exciting/relevant to sound persons.

Looking back, I should have asked you guys specifics of what you might want to hear about.
If I go back next year I'll try to make it a point to remember that.

(and hopefully you guys will remind me)

:)

Probably more than you think. But yes the lack of attention on sound (lighting, grip and others) is striking.

NAB did have a lot of good stuff. The Lectrosonics booth alone paid for my airplane ticket and hotel cost in savings with the advice I got. Sanken booth was small and simple. But you got to hear the COS 11-D, and the CS-3e. The latter of which just blew me away in both proximity effect and sonics. Sound Devices booth was good in terms of getting your mitts on all the different recorders and mixers. Very instructive. The Focal booth had THE MOST AMAZING near to mid field monitors I have heard in a long time, the SM9 series.

Nice!
Thanks, Cowpunk.
If you're there again next year we should get together.

Absolutely! I didn't get to meet half the people I wanted on this trip; it's difficult when you're working for 2 of the 3 days you're there!

As for why there is relatively little coverage of the audio side of NAB, I think a lot of it has to do with audio having a much more gradual evolvement vs the video side, especially as of the last decade or so. You rarely hear about "game-changers" in the world of location sound acquisition. Not many companies were showing off or introducing new products, most were displaying their existing product line - not that there is anything wrong with that, but existing products aren't typically the focus of NAB event coverage.

Also, compared to camera/grip/electric products, it's rather difficult to show the quality of audio gear through video coverage. For most of it, you really need to be there and listen through a quality system to appreciate the features.

Just my 2 cents!

Also, yes Andrew - the CS-3e is a spectacular mic. I don't know much about the intricacies of audio representation, but everything I've heard from that mic has felt incredible rich with detail! One of my favorites!

I thought the new PSC Alexis 6 channel mixer was very interesting. I got a little hands on time with the Tascam DR-60D. Very cool little unit, especially considering the price. There's what we were showing (which I'll let others talk about). Nagra showed the Nagra VII. Zaxcom showed the MAXX. Sound Devices had some cool new PIX260i stuff going on. Audio Limited has some new wireless being shipped to the US. There's lots going on in the audio world.

There is a lot going on, just not in the same leaps and bounds as video, because how much more revolutionary can audio gear get? Pick a Zaxcom, Nagra, SD, Aaton or Aeta recorder/mixer with all the channels you need and be happy forever. Pick a Schoeps, DPA, Senn, or whatever else mic and git er done. It's kind of hard to top "acoustically flawless" year after year.

Maybe the gear can get smaller, lighter, more integrated, cheaper and more flexible, but outright better? Hmm...

It can get better with new innovations. Zaxcom has built in their Zaxnet into their Nomad. The Sound Devices PIX260i opens up LOTS of possibilities. We completely redesigned our microphone suspension from the ground up to solve several key issues. The PSC Alexis mixer is doing some things that haven't been done before. Maybe they all these things aren't as flashy as some of the stuff going on the camera world, but they are pretty important for production sound.

That tadpole of K-tek looked cool. In fact I was actually looking for such a thing. Can it be dipped in river water with a Go Pro attached?
