No "Depth of Field" with Brevis adapter???

I am totally confused. I just got a (used) Brevis 35 with flip and set it up for testing today. Previously, I used a Letus 35a (not a flip adapter), so I am familiar with and understand the workings of an adapter. I have the Brevis set up following Dennis' video tutorial. I put on a Canon 50mm 1.4 lens and started playing around. Canon aperture is wide open at 1.4, DVX is wide open too (I'm inside with available lighting). I start to focus the Canon lens and find I can only get things in focus if I am all the way at the closest focus setting. And then EVERYTHING is in focus from a point a few feet in front of the camera and beyond. How can this be? I switched it out for my old Letus and was able to focus and achieve DOF. Same lens - even same lens mount (the reversible Nikon/Canon mount from the Letus will fit in the Brevis if you tighten the set screws far enough - the Brevis Canon mount I ordered hasn't arrived yet). I must be doing something wrong. Any ideas?

"Collimation"? The temporary mount seems to have the same spacing as the Brevis, but maybe the difference I barely perceive is enough to throw it off. I guess I will try to track down a Nikon for testing (my DP has his own and will be using them on the shoot this weekend).

with lens collimation, it's just millimeters that make 100% of a difference, so it could pretty well be impreceptible

Your Brevis probably already has a mocrocollimation system in place, all you need to do is learn how to use it. Go to the Cinevate website.
 
I bought this one used. It has the MP.1 upgrade but not the microcollimation unit. I think I just need to be patient and wait for the Canon mount or a Nikon lens.
 
after you get that sorted out, the video university does have a good tutorial that will help you understand collimation much better, so all your lenses will be spot on
 
Thanks Hans. I am quickly realizing this is like moving up from a coasting bike to a ten speed. The concept is the same, but there are more bells and whistles.

Are you sure about that? I thought that the microcollimation feature was part of the upgrade. Maybe I'm wrong about that. FWIW, I'd pick microcollimation over the "microprocessor" upgrade ANY day of the week.
 
Okay, I just compared my unit to the picture on Cinevate's website of the upgrade unit. It does appear that my unit has the upgrade. The previous owner stated it wasn't upgraded, but perhaps he wasn't aware of it. I think he had the upgrade done just prior to selling. Cool beans.
