No control over lighting

I'm shooting a small, intimate concert at the end of this week. The artists on stage are dictating how they want to be lit. I won't know this until the day of the performance. But I know it will be dark.

I did one of these about two months ago - the artist was lit only with one red bulb. be looked like an hour-old hamburger.

Focusing and color bleeding were apparent in the last shoot. What can i do to improve my uncontrollable setting?

I'm shooting with a Canon XL1 with a 12X lens.

Not a lot really in those conditions. If it were me, I would ask the artist if he wants to be lit flatteringly for video or for the stage performance because the two aren't always the same. He can still have a dark look and be well lit at the same time by concentrating on lighting just him and not the surroundings. Maybe even work in the classic look of the spotlight off in the smoky distance kind of thing that is so often seen in these kinds of stage performance videos. He can even have colored gels as long as its done tastefully and not in hamburger red for instance. Sometimes they'll get it and will play along and look for suggestions from you.

yeahh i was in this situation about 2 weeks ago...the artists told us there would be PLENTY of lighting and it was way too dark and they wouldnt let us do anything so whatever...we still got paid

my suggestion is to ask the artists if you can have one toplight for an overall fill so atleast your going to be getting an exposure. maybe just a couple china balls or somthing.

Is it a big band, or a local band? And is the concert's main purpose to get the video or to put on a show for the audience?

I would discuss with the band and the lighting designer and/or operator and see what setup they propose and suggest a couple things to make it look better for your video. See what they say - then if it turns out crappy, you still get paid and its their fault for not listening to you.
