No-Budget Desert Shooting

I'm wondering what you're guys' thoughts are on no-budget desert shooting. I'm currently a college student and I'm thinking about making a movie that takes place in the Mojave desert this summer, but I'm wondering how doable it'll be without any kind of budget (meaning probably won't be able to afford permits). Thanks for any input.

It's actually not hard if you are out in the desert. I mean out in the desert. Not by a main road. The CHP is a bit nasty about that. What part of the Mojave, I know the desert pretty good.

I haven't really decided where in the Mojave yet. Right now I'm just trying to gauge how hard it would be and if it's a possibility before I go and start writing a script for it. Optimally it would probably be a couple day shoot with the cast & crew camping for lodging (and the camp would probably also be a location for the film).

That sounds so great. A big challenge and a lot of fun. You could make the film as close to your reality as possible: make setting up the tents a part of the film, getting water, worrying about where to camp. If you find an abandoned building or car, use that.

Or how about trying to dig up something buried out there. Maybe a scene where the cast is talking in a diner at the edge of the desert. They say that they are going to be out there a whole month, but they never mention exactly why. The possibilities are endless. Would love to be out there on a project like that.

Anyway, best of luck on the project.
