No Anamorphic on external Monitor?

I have an anamorphic clip that I have stretched, looks great in FCP but I'm not getting it to show me widescreen on the external monitor. Does anyone know what the problem can be? It just shows the full screen version.

I assume you have a standard 4x3 TV as your external monitor right?

The first thing to do is check if it has a 16x9 mode switch on it. A Sony studio monitor will have the button on the front, but Sony Wega TVs have a menu setting. This button will "squeeze" the anamorphic signal into a letterbox on your 4x3 screen.

If you don't have a TV capable of displaying 16x9 content at the correct aspect ratio, then there isn't much you can do while you edit. However, if you would like to screen your cut when you're done (or make a dub) then create a new 4x3 sequence and "drag" your 16x9 sequence from the bin into the new empty timeline. This is called nesting, and will create one clip in the new sequence that represents your edit. Since FCP knows that the other sequence is 16x9, it will correctly squueze it into a 1.78:1 letterbox. You may need to render if you don't have enough processing power to play it in real time.

Re: No Anamorphic on external Monitor?

Thanks a ton for this info. I totally hear ya now.

I tried to drag the 16x9 sequence into the 4x3 sequence's timeline and it still jumped back to 4x3. Tried a few times, maybe somthing I'm missing.

What if I make a DVD with this clip? Because DVD's play wide on this little monitor.

BTW, it is a Sony Wega 13inch.

If it is a Wega, you should be able to just go into the menus and flip from "automatic" aspect ratio to 16x9. That will force it into 16x9 since it isn't receiving 16x9 cariier signal like it does from a DVD.

This way you don't have to mess with 4x3 sequences at all.

Thanks Dashwood, Unfortnitly there is no menu setting for that. The small Wega's have very little options.
