nNovia or Firestore users?

Yes...I did, Firestore with DVX 100A. completely satisfied. I think this is one way to ensure longer life span for your camera; ease of use and transfer of files notwithstanding..... costs roughly as much as the replacement of heads after sometime....lots of additional possibilities for connectivity and digital transfers.

I use the nNovia Quickcapture and am happy with it. I had a problem with it early but they took care of me in a timely manner and I have had no other problems since. It is great to be able to just transfer the files from the Quickcapture to the hard drive. Another nice thing is viewing them on the set to make sure you got what you wanted. I use the tape in the camera as a backup. I like having a security blanket.

Oh, yeah. I'm using it on the DVX100A. It just goes out through the firewire connector.

That's great feedback! One last question: Did either the Firestore or nNovia drives allow a true tapless operation, allowing the camera to act as a controller to the drive, or was using a tape required and the drive was just a backup to the tape?

I'll add my 5 cents on the nNovia: overall, I like it. Convenient, good battery life, and not capturing is a big help.

However, they replaced my first one because it had a number of tech issues, and one of those issues remains in the current QC. That is, it will default from QT to AVI for no reason. You have to check carefully every time...not just when you turn it on, but when you press record. If it's defaulted, you have to stop and start recording until it stays with QT.

If you remember to check, you're ok, but I'd rather not deal with it. Not saying this would happen with yours, but I know at least one other member here had same prob.

With current rebate on DV Rack (and recent ownership of PC laptop), I've decided to move on. The additional features for checking video and audio quality really appeal to me, especially since I'm shooting documentary footage that's difficult or impossible to reshoot.

Finally, in answer to your question, as far as I've been able to tell: no, a DVX100a will not drive the QC without a tape. I have to stop/start/pause with the drive's controls. The camera's only role is to feed a constant video/audio stream out through the FW port.

I also have to use a tape installed to get a A2D nNovia to sync with my Recording Controls in camera. But if you change the mode to ST0 (NOT ST1) and simply push Record & Play on the nNovia it will Record until you push stop. But the Record / Pause on the camera is disabled. I'm looking into their 5 button wired remote which will then give me full control of the nNovia. Their support gave up on me or could not conclude when I asked if they have a Problem with Panasonic since they claim the A2D works with all camcorders. I may be selling and going with the Firestore if I can't figure this out soon! I don't want to use tape... even as a backup! Seems senseless sonce I paid almost 1800.00 for a tapeless drive. Regarding the other post that .MOV is the default, you set whether you want .MOV or .AVI and once you save that mode, it will stay there next time you turn it on.

Anybody else having this problem?

Well, actually it SHOULD stay there, JEV. But mine doesn't.
I think we might have discussed this a few months ago. I had to send mine in for the same problem back in July of 05. They successfully fixed it and I've had no problem with it since then.

Concerning capturing without a tape in the camera I'll reiterate what has already been said; set the QC to ST0 and use the record function on the QC to control taping. It's not as convenient. Since I use a tape for backup I always have a tape in the camera anyway. It is a lot more convenient, though, copy the files over from the QC than to do the Log & Capture thing in FCP.
