I have a chance to purchase a g5 for really good price. The system specs are 1.6ghz 1.25 gigs of ram and 80gb hd. Airport card. CD/DVD-RW drive. Comes with fcp 4.5. My question is: will I be able to upgrade to, and effectively run fcp 5>. Also I will most likely be editing DV to begin with. Any opinions?

1.6gHz G5, is that an iMac, I suppose? We have two G5 iMacs (I think 1.6GHz) at work, 2GB RAM and 120GB HD. They are good for basic editing (news with not much fancy stuff, only very little color correction, titles, graphics or slow motions, mostly hard cuts or plain dissolves).
Rendering isn't lightning fast, so more extensive stuff like picture-in-picture movements combined with graphics (like in trailers) can be a pain in the ass ...

However, a friend of mine just bought a new iMac, Intel core duo and uses the latest FCP 5.1 (or 5.2? I'm not sure) and he said that thing is twice as fast in FCP than a desktop G5 with 4 cpus. So maybe an Intel Mac mini might be a much better choice if you have to render a lot.
