Nisi & LEE Filter

I have the NiSi variable ND 4-500 (2-9 stops)
I took it home and it's weird, it seems as though it doesn't do a thing when I rotate it about 1/4 of the way. When I go to max, it didn't seem like 9 stops. From min to max it looks like about 2-3 stop difference.. not the 7 stops it says it does.

Anyone else had this issue?
How do I fully test it to confirm?

I also have the LEE big stopper & 100x150 soft grads (0.6, 0.9).
Are these any good? I've been hearing that they produce a bad blue cast. Are they worth it? I feel like I may need to return these

I've had great results with the Format Hi-Tech filters. Make sure not to pick up the resin ones, they're horrible.
But the glass ones are pretty good. I like my Sun Filter from them.

Otherwise, on the cheaper side of glass filters, there's Cavision. I never had issues with mines, and they're very affordable.

Every digital camera has a meter built in and a read out in some form or shape so should be very easy to adjust the vari ND filter while looking at the exposure meter and see how that behaves in relation to rotating the filter. If it's not up to the given spec I'd send it back. I'm generally skeptical of vari NDs, own one myself and have used several brands but not good enough in my book.

I'd rather go with higher quality single NDs and exchange them.

Looked into Format, but they do not have variable ND's.
Im not looking for a solid ND but a variable ND round filter. And unfortunately Format doesnt have any.

For run-n-gun video use, I NEED a variable filter.
I use solid & grad filters for photography but need a variable ND for videos.

And yes, I did return is as it wasnt to spec. But Looking to see if they'll send a new one thats better or still looking at other brands, but not a lot to choose from :(
