Nintendo Wii (!@!*!)

Sorry, but if you're going to discuss video game marketing, you should research the companies in discussion, prior.

I think you took those facts the wrong way, as well. It clearly states (And coincides with my point) that the average game buyer is thirty-seven... which is about the age of a parent or gaurdian now-a-days.

Nintendo has never marketed their systems toward an adult crowd, which is why you still don't see as many blood and gore titles on Nintendo as opposed to Pokemon, Super Mario franchised titles, and other games that are child friendly.

While Capcom and a lot of other 3rd Party developers still drop titles on Nintendo's platform that contain gore and the like, these are not the things that sell Nintendo. I'm sorry, but your point-of-view is purely consumer.

Going back to the Playstation point... as I said before, it was just as ridiculed as the name Wii is now. I know, I followed the release of Playstation and Ultra 64 (Yeah, remember that?) when all of it came to brew. At the time, I was a youngster and I harbored great brand loyalty, something I do not have anymore.

Peer pressure? Uhm... amongst my peers, you play great VIDEO GAMES... and whatever system they happen to be on is fine. But, just to let you know, I'd be more embarrassed amongst my peers to say that I bought an X-box, because the titles are very unappealing to myself and just about everyone that I circle with. Peer pressure is not a factor, I'm sorry... I'm a bit too old for that.

Seems like you're afraid of telling your buddies that you bought a Nintendo Wii... well, I feel sorry for you and the games that you'll be missing out on.

I'll have one, because Next-Gen Zelda games are greater than.

Yes it does say on fact 5 that the average "buyer" is 37 , but right above that on 4 it says the average "player" is 30. Was that just a mistake on your part ? If so that's cool.

I never said that "you" buy games or system because of peer pressure I said people don't. Where did you get that "I'm afraid to tell my buddies" that I bought a Wii ? and why are you feeling sorry for me. I never said anything about not buying the system nor being afraid to buy the system. All I said was I think Wii is a stupid name and you stated that "Just a name dudes, Just a name". So i'm explaining what's in a name. No need to try and take shots at me.

I compleltly agree with Kholi.
The comment on Nintendo's target market is right on point. You can see it right in the games they develope. A huge percentage are all party games that you can play with your family. They do have the more mature titles, but thier sales on that system do poorly compared to others. The average player may be "30" but that doesnt detail every specific system. But yeah, its just a name lol.
and the first thing that came to mind when i heard it was "We" as in "Us", We as in "weeeeeeeeeee im having fun!" and "Oui" as in "yes" in french lol.

hmmm, I hate when silly discussions like this take that hard left turn into oncoming traffic. :(

what would you rather say you just bought in a group full of your peers ? And please don't tell me that peer pressure doesn't work because we know that's not true.

THen what was the point of this comment at all if it wasn't to say "peer pressure exists in the video game world"... you totally lost me. I took it as "your peers pressure you into buying certain game systems and games."

How was I supposed to take it? (Not personally, but generally.)

Also, it became debate the moment you start pulling fact sheets, and it's no longer discussion.

Discussion: I don't like the name Wii. =(( My response: It's just a name guys, just a name.

Debate: The average game player is 30. My Response: Read replies after that point.

Sorry if the debate offended anyone.

And no, it wasn't a mistake. I saw "fact" number four, and it still hasn't much relevance to Nintendo's customer base at all. I don't even see how that "fact" can be a fact at all. Maybe it's based on the 8-bit generation (X generation) and the idea that they're all thirty now and still playing video games.

Either way-- If you took the discussion turned debate as offensive, then let's all stop crying about the name change below the dotted line.

That question was a rhetorical question and it was to say that peer pressure exists in the video game world it just wasn't meant to say that peer pressure exist in "your" video game world. I have no way of knowing what reasons you have for buying a system or a game. I also wouldn't think to try and tell you what you think or feel because that's just arrogant so I'm sorry if you mistook what I said.

The statistics from that website come from Peter D. Hart Research and Associates

So I would think that information would hold some credibility

there probably is, but i wouldnt count on it. You could find relevant info on the MUSIC industry, since people BUY mudic, but people dont' BUY music videos (lol, yes, I've heard of itunes)

although you mihgt find tv ratings info, but even then i'm not sure

I didn't mistake it for that at all. I thought you were saying that peer pressure has something to do with ANYONE buying video games.

I've honestly never heard of peer pressure being a factor in what games anyone purchased to play.

Well i'm sure it's not like everyone that buys a game does so for that reason but it's just factor that can occur.

Have you ever bought or got a game because your friends had the game too ? ( Non- Rehtorical ) Even though you may have bought the game on your own , because they had it and you could play with them you bought that game over another game equally qualified. Or on the reverse side maybe somebody actually purchases Wii because you did it even though they didn't like the name.

Peer Pressure happens all the time without us knowing it and it's not always a bad thing. Sometimes it prevents people from doing things that they shouldn't be doing but want to. It's not always the whole "hey , dude you wanna smoke" type stuff that we see on TV but i'm sure that you already know that. ( Non-Sarcasm )

i havnt been into nintendo sice SNES...all of their other systems have just been kinda not interesting to me.

they have always seemed to trail sony and ms latly.

i dont like their new name. its odd. 360 and ps3 sound cooler.

woah, I started this thread. Next time I look, 30 posts.

Guess we have a lot of opinionated gamerz in here!

I grew up eating nintendo for breakfast. At one point I could beat SMB in 5 minutes, walk through the walls to get to level -1, and all that jazz.

I owned a power glove after seeing lucas in "the wizard"

I owned a game genie

I own a gamecube and a PSII now. And 3 GBA, 1 DS, and 2 PSPS (between me and my wife). Oh... and 2 iPod Videos, of course.

So you can deduce two things about me. 1) I am an idiot when it comes to money. 2) I love games! Just love them. From Wolfenstein to doom to alice to warcraft to GTA to zelda.

and...

I still think Wii is a stupid-ass-lame title. I don't give a crap what statistics you have for me. the title stinks. You say it doesn't matter. But titles have killed movies. A haircut killed that show felicity. It's a superficial market where looks count. Trust me, I used to be in Game and Music marketing for a very long time.

To me, ninendo, in their home console world, have made a series of mistakes these past few years. I used to love their stuff. Now I hang on to it for a zelda game every 5 years. Even the Mario games suck now. Meanwhile, the PSII has some kick-ass games (god of war anyone) that make me feel like a kid again. I don't have an xBox because I hate microsoft for personal reasons, but call of duty 2 looks amazing (I love 1 on my comp)... it's sad to me that Nintendo is getting so lame. Or maybe it's me and the gaming world. tastes change. Styles change.

I miss playing SFII in the arcade! :)

More power to you. If you care that much about the name of a video game system, then make them feel it by not purchasing it. Otherwise, it's time wasted bantering back and forth with people on the internet about how much you don't like the name of the game system you're going to purchase.

I could care less about the actual system, it's the third-party support that's important. Whichever systems hail Mario, Zelda, Squaresoft/Square-enix titles, Capcom (Resident Evil), and Konami (Silent Hill franchise), are the ones I'll have. ... Unless they're on X-box, because I'm not wasting my money on that thing. I already have a few kick-ass PC's.

Have fun.

lol if mario, zelda, square, RE, and Silent hill were all 360 exclusives you wouldn't go for it?

Hmmm. There's a chance I might. I can't say never. That would really suck, though. I don't know what it is about X-box and their titles that just totally turns me off. I didn't even like playing Counter-Strike on X-box... it was just... wrong. =(

I dont like playing counter strike on xbox because it wasnt fun (to me at least) but there are plenty of other games I really like for the box

I couldnt bring myself to buy a 360 because there wasnt anything I HAD to play. But when Oblivion came along it came really close. I ended asking a friend, since he plays WOW ALL the time, if just MAYBE i could borrow his 360, and he siad yes. So I rented oblivion from gamefly, picked up his 360 and got to play for a month for about $15! almost 3 months later he hasnt asked for it back!

Anyway, not that its not worth it, but to me, personally, I can't justify $400 for a game console, I just dont play enough. And rumors that PS3 might be $600 means you can count me out. Which is why I'm excited about Nintendo's offering. I can affored a cheaper box, and the new controller possibilties have me psyked, even though the potential for disaster is significant.

So insteas of buying Nintendo's box last, like this gen, looks like I'll be heading to the nintendo camp first, and waiting a few years for the others guys prices to go down

I'm with you. I don't think I've ever paid retail price for a game console and it's not about to start now. Those things are ridiculously high-priced to begin with. If there were no such thing as third-party developers, I'd never have a game system, probably. Even Nintendo's titles alone aren't enough to keep me buying Nintendo systems. (Resident Evil 4 was what caused me to actually shell out twenty dollars to buy a Gamecube, before then I just bought the Cube games I wanted to play and borrowed from a friend.).

With regard to the "Wii" brand, consider what you first thought of "Google" or "Yahoo!" or "iPod." Sometimes it just takes time.

I think Nintendo would've been smart to develop the GameCube brand in the same manner they did GameBoy. A little continuity isn't a bad thing. But "Wii" it is.

Nintendo is a very unusual company in that the creative element truly drives the business end of things. At times this will lead to innovation, especially in software (Pokemon, all the Shigeru Miyamoto titles, Tamagatchi, Brain Training, etc.).

Some of their hardware innovations have been excellent (wireless controllers) and some have been completely wacked (Virtual Boy, anyone?).

Nintendo has the most valuable intellectual property in the business, a 25-year catalog of compelling games, and billions of dollars in cash reserves. They aren't going away anytime soon.

I respect the fact they're doing something different with "Wii," but it remains to be seen whether it will be brilliant, or another Virtual Boy.

Thanks for that. Let's hope it's not another Virtual Boy, though. Gross.
