Nintendo Wii (!@!*!)

So for any gamers like me out there, Nintendo just announced the official new name for the Revolution Console:

The Wii (pronounced "We" or Wee)

and that's the name worldwide.

I guess they just got tired of actually selling game consoles. Thought market suicide would be a better option.

Tell them what you think:

Who cares what it's called? I doubt it'll affect sales if it's a good console, especially among those dying for the 300th Zelda game.

Nintendo will NEVER fall off the game market. Nintendo is WAY bigger than a lot of people think. They are responsible for a lot of technology all over the world. The zelda following they have alone would be enough anyway lol, but dont doubt nintendo. They made the first playstation incase you didnt know. and i like the name.

I for one hate the name. I mean just imagine going into a store and asking for one, or saying i'm playing with my "wii"

It's just a name.

And Nintendo not selling game consoles will A) Never be a problem. B) Affect the actually mega-giant in a fashion where they would no more exist.

LIke it was said above, They do more than just video games. And the following that they have with their characters is enough to sell any console, no matter what.

Just a name, dudes. Just a name.

Well I'm not saying they won't sell it and I Definitely think it won't destroy the company. But we all know that having a cool name is always a plus and helps sell things. Otherwise there would be huge marketing divisions and meetings to decide these things

Uhmm...

Here's what I have to say about names. When the "PLAYSTATION" was released, there was this huge ordeal about the system sounding more like a Fisher-Price toy, and not like a video game system targeted towards a more mature market (Which essentially, Sony's advertising campaign specifically went for late-teens to mid-twenties male demographic.) This was also considered a "bad move" by consumers.

Years later, we're all waiting for a PLAYSTATION 3 to hit the shelves (Estiimated eight-hundred dollar release tag) so that we can all scoop one up.

If you think Wii is a bad name, chances are you'll still buy it, because it's not bothering you enough to actually make up your mind.

You'd also want to note that Nintendo doesn't have a tendency to sell on sub-names, as opposed to their actual company name. Parents are the ones buying Nintendo systems for their youth, because Nintendo has a tendecy to target the younger crowd as opposed to more mature gamers. Gameboy SP is still known, to the base consumer, as a Nintendo Gameboy (at best, Color or Flip). The Nintendo 64 was referred to as "The new NIntendo", when it first hit shelves (I was working in Wal-Mart at the time). And as well with the Gamecube (Though it seemed this release saw more sub-name usage than it's older brother.) I'm sure the new one will end up being branded, by the normal consumer, as "The New Nintendo" as well.

I personally like the international play-on-words, but that's personally. I can see a massive marketing campaign devoted to the simple little three letter tag.

point taken, but at the same time, I honestly can't remember the last time I've heard anyone i know say "playstation", PS2 and PS3 are preferable and cooler anyway.

I mean it doesnt even SAY Playstation on the PS2 or PS3 hardware, it uses the abbreviation.

"Wee" either means puny, is a reference to genitalia, or urination...

I really hope they change it ;)

"Wee" in my Vietnamese friend who drives a white Acura RSX everyday, to work in his moms nailshop around the corner.

If Wee bought a Wii then we would be playing with Wee's Wii! That sounds pretty freakin wierd! What's Nintendo thinkin?

Listen to what you just said.

"Parents are the ones buying Nintendo systems for their youth, because Nintendo has a tendecy to target the younger crowd as opposed to more mature gamers."

Do you thinks it's a smart idea for Nintendo to target the younger crowd as opposed to more mature gamers ? When the average gamer is 30 years old ?
http://www.theesa.com/facts/top_10_facts.php

Who do you think has the money to blow paying 400-500 dollars on systems ?

Lets first look at the word playstation Play+Station that kinda tells us what it does but "Wii" tells me nothing and it doesn't even sound cool to say.

Yes , Yes we know Nintendo has a large fanbase that will buy the system even if it was called "Crap Box" but isn't the goal a company to not just get people that already use their product to buy ,but to take customer's from the other guy ?

So let's look at the big picture
PS3
Xbox 360
and Wii

what would you rather say you just bought in a group full of your peers ? And please don't tell me that peer pressure doesn't work because we know that's not true.

I totally agree with you about the name, but I do wish to point out a few things:

I don't think even Nintendo would argue they target the younger audience. That doesn't mean the "Average Gamer" (18+) can't enjoy the majority of their great software, but they know their bread and butter is what you'd call "kid friendly". And even though the vast majority of gamers are not minors, Nintendo has said again and again and again that as a company they are still profitable. Unlike Microsoft and even Sony, Nintendo comes out year after year on top profit wise, even if most people see them as 3rd in the "console war". So again, the point being that they don't need to change the name based purely on it's lack of appeal to the 26yo males (but please god make them change it :)

Secondly, and kinda on the same point, Nintendo has stated several times that the... here we go... the "Wii"... will cost much less than Sony or Microsoft's boxes (here's hoping for $99!) but will not offer goodies like HD support (ouch). so again, appealing to the "old crowd" isn't the number one priority.

Looking at how much they've put behind the announcement of this new name, I doubt its changing if it comes out this year, but here hoping to a nice 'subtitle' or cool abreviation... although how you abbreviate one silible is beyond me... oh well...

Well of course Nintendo is still profitable they aren't dumb to put all their eggs in one basket. I mean lets look at all the products they have out.
Gamecube
Nintendo DS
Gameboy Advance

I mean if you think about it they have a product going against all the major console makers. Also it's one thing for the company to be making money as a whole as oppose to their console meeting it's target goal. Do you think they met the target sales for the Gamecube ? I don't

exactly, although I think they are quite happy with how many GC's are out there, once they hit $99, everyone I know picked one up, myself included. I mean I'm sure they'd be happy to have Sony numbers too, but they're strategy seems to be doing them well

Sorry, but if you're going to discuss video game marketing, you should research the companies in discussion, prior.

I think you took those facts the wrong way, as well. It clearly states (And coincides with my point) that the average game buyer is thirty-seven... which is about the age of a parent or gaurdian now-a-days.

Nintendo has never marketed their systems toward an adult crowd, which is why you still don't see as many blood and gore titles on Nintendo as opposed to Pokemon, Super Mario franchised titles, and other games that are child friendly.

While Capcom and a lot of other 3rd Party developers still drop titles on Nintendo's platform that contain gore and the like, these are not the things that sell Nintendo. I'm sorry, but your point-of-view is purely consumer.

Going back to the Playstation point... as I said before, it was just as ridiculed as the name Wii is now. I know, I followed the release of Playstation and Ultra 64 (Yeah, remember that?) when all of it came to brew. At the time, I was a youngster and I harbored great brand loyalty, something I do not have anymore.

Peer pressure? Uhm... amongst my peers, you play great VIDEO GAMES... and whatever system they happen to be on is fine. But, just to let you know, I'd be more embarrassed amongst my peers to say that I bought an X-box, because the titles are very unappealing to myself and just about everyone that I circle with. Peer pressure is not a factor, I'm sorry... I'm a bit too old for that.

Seems like you're afraid of telling your buddies that you bought a Nintendo Wii... well, I feel sorry for you and the games that you'll be missing out on.

I'll have one, because Next-Gen Zelda games are greater than.

LoL--

I'll play anything that I find fun. I didn't know peer pressure had anything to do with video games. THat's honestly a new one to me.

I don't care what it's called. I buy my Nintendo consoles simply to play Zelda. The Revolution/Wii will be no different.
