Ninja Blade or Blackmagic Video Assist on a C100 mkII

I was all set to buy a Ninja Blade as a monitor/recorder, but then I just caught wind of the Blackmagic Video Assist. They seem to be very similar products on the surface, but I heard that the Video Assist does 1080 60p, which I would want for my C100 mk II.

But then I also heard a few dislikes with the Video Assist, namely that it doesn't do 3:2 pulldown on the C100's HDMI stream, so everything comes in as 59.97i.

Can anyone help clarify the pros/cons between these two recorders?

I don't know about the pulldown/camera compatibility, but I like the VA's peaking, screen quality and interface better than the NB. It also has SDIs in case you need to use it with any other cameras without HDMIs.

Have not used the VA but I love my Ninja Blade, rock solid. I was shooting in the Sahara a few months ago, temps were 128F and part of the screen on my Blade literally melted. Atomos put a new screen in for free even though the Blade was over 2 year old. Have not heard great things about the VA as far as some of the issues you ask about it, but if you will use 1080 60p a lot, could still be a better choice, Blade only does 720/60p.

You're on the wrong forum for it. Check out BMCuser where almost everyone has one. Thorough reviews and discussions have taken place there as well as the official BM forum.

I work with a Production Company that often uses the 5" VA to record ProRes.

Seems reliable, but the exposed SD card slot doesn't fill me with confidence, & there's no LUT support. Have never used Atomos products so don't know how they compare.

For what it's worth, I went ahead and bought the Ninja Blade. I figured being more popular, it would have a better resale value.
