nikon vs. canon lenses

so I've been doing a ton of reading and research about 35mm adapters and lenses because I want to get a setup for my xh-a1. one thing I haven't been able to find out though from my reading is why people seemingly prefer nikon lenses over canon lenses. I've read that part of it is that most nikon lenses have both an autofocus and manual focus options, while most newer canon lenses are specifically autofocus. is that it? or are nikon lenses just better engineered lenses?

most nikon lenses allow you to control aperture aswell.

they have also kept the same mount over the years so old nikon lenses will work just as well as new ones.. more or less

the canons need a bit of TLC to keep working well.... but dammit do they look good, and damn do they make fast lenses....

I like the ability to be able to use ANY Nikon lens. Though I use mostly decades-old AI lenses, I know I can use a 40 year old lens just as well as a new one (if not better given shorter focus rings on AF lenses).

Plus, as a personal side note, I prefer Nikon film cameras even though I shoot with Canon EOS digital cameras.

does anyone know the differece with Nikon and Canon glass?

I kow that the Nikon's give a little softer image then others but I don't know much about Canon's.....anyone?
