Dan, those are excellent! Huge difference from your earlier headshot work. Whatever adjustments you're making, stick with it!

Bill, too funny. At first I was like, amazing post work! Then I was like, why are those people dressed like 17th century paupers?

Ha!

I went up to visit my Mother a couple of weeks ago, and somehow she talked me into taking a few pics of her and her Husband. I was really hungover, and some of them are a bit over-processed, but she likes them none the less...

No other gear than just me and my D80. And photoshop ;)

Hey guys! Got my new D200 in the mail today just in time for a 12pm client. Here's a couple from today's session...

Both D200/50mm/one with SB600, one without.

Alveraz, I love the soft light you get when you use CLS AWL in that first photo. What aperture are you normally shooting? Must be pretty low to have the background that blurry. Also, are you using some sort of diffusion? Either a bounce or shoot through umbrella or something? You have just enough shadow on the right side of the nose to give depth, but no harsh lines. Its really nice.

Thanks for your comment btw. Interesting enough, in the first photo I was shooting in really hard sunlight around 6pm. I put the sun over his right shoulder and turned up my bare SB800 as high as it would go. Lifted that mug up over his head camera right and I was relatively happy with the result.

In the second, we were in complete shade as the sun had dropped behind the barn. The light was from my new White Lightning X1600, bare bulb with the reflector. I'm getting the beauty dish I bought with it on Friday, so I hope to have some cool studio stuff coming soon. I need to get a Vagabond so I can drag it out into the field too. :)

Dan, I'm stoked you're developing your work man, it's exciting!

Actually that first shot was just a silver reflector below to bounce a little sun. No CLS in that shot at all, just the opening of the garage behind me, that's what you see in the catchlights. the second shot was CLS (one sb 600).

Andrew, Well I'm a pessimist about new cameras coming out every six months. I've used the D80 for two years now and make good scratch with it. Upgrading to a D200 was like pulling teeth for me, at least I did that :)

However, I plan to grab a D700 in a few months, business has really picked up so I'll have the extra dough and I'm ready to go for it. We'll see. I know, I need to get with it.

Oh wow. I totally would have guessed the other way around. I guess it does make a little more sense that way. Reflectors rule so much sometimes!
