Nikon User Thread

Thanks guys. All the skin (veins) and the blood and zombification was done in PS along with the sky replacement. Most of the other elements were there in the original photo. Minor sharpening in PS but I am very happy with my new Sigma, tack sharp. :)

It's been a while since I've shot or posted a photo, but today I went out on my first engagement session for my roommate and his fiance. I've got a trillion photos to go through, but here's one I liked and touched up:

Just got a never-used D300 for the price of a D90. Tried it out on a gig at an abandoned city. Fantastic camera -- I'm looking forward to getting back into still photography after being away for 20 years.

Where is that? Prypiat? I'd hate to go there considering I'd not want to take the risk. 20 years + is still not nearly enough time! Yikes.

Kurchatov. I was planning to go to Pripriet and have already mapped all the cool locations (found using Google Earth) into the GPS -- but the Russians have started using it again to test missiles. Doh!

very cool stuff, pmark (the awesomeness of the scenes almost makes me forgive the HDR halos). I also have an interest in going to see Pripyat. so I take it they are no longer doing the tours?

Nikon D80 tech question

Nikon D80 tech question

ok, so i was too lazy to search through all 260 some pages of this thread. i own a D80 and was wondering if anyone has had success with getting better detail in the highlights, ie: cine gamma curves on HD cameras? also, under the Shooting Menu, in Optimize Image menu you can customize a setting for how the camera will capture an image. i was wondering for the Color Mode whether or not to use option Ia(sRGB) or IIIa(sRGB) when working with a PC in post. option II(Adobe RGB) would be more Macs, right?

thanks!

I usually underexpose by 1/3 or 2/3 stop to maintain highlight detail. That plus Recovery in Lightroom usually keeps me happy enough.

As for the color mode, ever since my D100 I have used Adobe RGB and never looked back. The color range is wider, the only downside I can think to using it is that you'll want to convert to sRGB for the web, anyway... so if you're posting everything online, that might be the better choice for you. I shoot all RAW Adobe RGB... prefer to keep the "negatives" as pure and detailed as possible. It has nothing to do with Mac or PC.

Sorry dougspice, I don't mean to negate what you are saying but I need to clarify a few things:

Its true you can really make sure your highlight details are maintained bu exposing for highlight and then bringing them back even further in post but if youa re shooting raw, the majority of your information is stored in your highlights (exponentially in fact) Thats why when you are shooting raw you want to try to exposure for the shadows (middle to 1 stop above middle exposure) because you can always bring that back in a camera RAW editor. If you expose for the highlights then you will have a very hard time bringing out detail in your shadows. If you ar eshooting JPEG then yes, expose for highlights.

In regards to Adobe RGB v.s sRGB. It's true that Adobe RGB has a wider gamut but unless your work is being offeset printed you will want to develop in sRGB because the adobe RGB spectrum is out of the range of the printers and even papers you can find today. In essence you will get more accurate results if you shoot sRGB for most scenarios.

I took a film class a few months ago. We learned to develop B&W film on our own. These are from the roll I developed in the class. I just got an Epson V500 today and have scanned a few in. There is a little more dust on these than I would normally have as these negs were hanging in my bathroom for 2 months before I scanned them. :) Shot on a Nikon N90s w/ TriX. Used 20mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 50mm f/1.4 on various shots.

Enjoy!
