Nikon User Thread

Just bought a perfect condition, Nikon USA warrantied, display D40 for 300 USD (hey, who can pass THAT deal up?)! So I went out and took some test shots:

Fractals FTW!

I just realized that none of these were horizontal :( Sorry about the page space guys...

Shaw, way cool! The Big Dipper one is Great! Was the moon out? I've taken long (several seconds) exposures at night before with just moon light and the landscape looked just about like daylight since the moon is something like 97% reflective of sun light. What was the exposure time?

Great shots.

Larry

Thanks guys! I had fun shooting them!

alwayslearning: Yep! The moon was "a day after full" and almost directly behind me (maybe 45 degrees above the horizon?) - taken around 3:00am. I shot with a 20mm lens at f2.8, ISO 400, and exposed for 30 seconds. Longer than 30 seconds and I found the stars' movement makes the image just look blurry without being long enough to see star trails. I was sort of disappointed actually; a notable amount of smoke in the air semi-washed out the horizon (the red tinge) but overall I'm happy with how it came out!

I also have some 10mm fisheye shots of the night sky taken with a (borrowed) D300 with 10min exposure times but they didn't turn out so well. Lots of read out errors and banding. I'm going to have to try some dark frame subtraction next time to see if I can get something better.

So much to learn!

@Matt: LOL! That kid has seriously blue eyes!

Thank you very much for commenting Shaw.

Actually, apart from simply enlarging his eyes, that's what they look like. There are lots of pictures of him in this thread (where he is not made to look like Gollum heh), and if you like that one, you should check out some of the others.

His eyes have a strange quality to them. My eyes change color, from blue green to emerald green, depending on my mood or the intensity of it. His eyes get very, very blue inside, but in direct sunlight, or just being outside, they turn a very light blue bordering on gray. Odd.

But he's a cool kid, though he has learned to pull himself up in his crib to a standing position and now the entire crib when he stands is a big gnawing post.

There is about a thousand things going through your mind when this happens. I used to race and this is not a good position to be in.

I actually have a whole sequence of this shot with a Nikon D200. Amazing!

Matt, I get the feeling that little guy has you wrapped around his finger. :D Really cute kid! I'm not sure I've ever seen eyes that blue in person. That's just crazy! I have nominally blue eyes myself but most of the time they would probably be more accurately described as "sea gray"; nothing quite like that!

@Adam what was the shutter speed on that shot? The sign and the hose sort of distract from the image but overall very nice!

As for this signs and the hose...not really caring about that cause I was in the right place at the right time to capture the image. I wasnt there to make this photo the best ever nor do I wanna sit in photo shop for 20 min takin that stuff out.

Shaw your images were amazing especially the one at night that looks like day. Good job! Welcome to the Nikon forums!

Oh thanks Adam! I used to hang around DVXuser a looong time ago but then life struck as it always seems to do. Nice to see we have a specific forum for photography now!

Thanks for the info. It must have been REALLY bright out for that shutter speed; I guess I'm just used to photographing in canyons and at night! I hear you about photoshop. Hope my post wasn't taken the wrong way there, it's an excellent photograph!

Post was not taken wrong at all...I see where you are coming from though and thanks for the input. And I hope I wasn't coming off as rude sorry if it seemed like it!

And just to let you know it was extremely bright outside. It was in Salt Lake City, Utah!

Here is a Redline Factory Rider. During the day a cloud moved over the track and created this nice almost like a silk over the track...made for really nice images. Here is one! OH and this is just a sharpen layer that actually made the image look amazing. Nothing else has been touched!

Thanks dude. Like I said, there are a ton of pics of him in this thread. And not ones that I have altered his face to make a funny. He has the bluest eyes I've ever seen.

And he's cool..

Adam Gonzalez, (roughly) what shutter speed do you use for these shots? Do you go all manual with everything, do you work some things automatic? HOW D'YA ROLL DAWG? You've got such a great collection of action shots.

A few more shots, of varying quality.

Fun little stream, I liked the ripples.

Star Rise. Really wish I'd adjusted the framing but at night, framing is so bloody difficult.

And the ever fun crepuscular rays:

EDIT: No saturation adjustments have been made to any of my images BTW.

I also modified my Road/Dipper image, still not entirely happy with it yet.

For the Redline Rider shot the stats are on the last page. I like to shoot most of the time in manual but if the sun is roaming around I usually use Aperture Priority cause for these fast moving riders, you need all of the depth of focus you can get. So I set it to no lower than a F5.6 and if the shutter speed drops below 800 I up the ISO a bit, wont go over ISO 400 though! For this shot:

ISO:400
F: 6.3
Shutter 1/800
Exposure Mode: Manual
