Nikon User Thread

Quick question, need an answer ASAP.

D40 or D60? Does the 4mp justify the extra $200? Are the bodies the same? I read a review somewhere that said that the D60 is not as good as the D40 and that the body is more "plastic".

Save the money and invest in better glass.

In a year or two you will upgrade camera, glass you will keep until you drop it... Glass lasts forever (hopefully) cameras die.

So D40? Thanks!

So the extra 4mp is just a marketing scheme I suppose...I'm not looking to do giant 20x20 portraits yet, but I thought if I get the 10mp one I'd be covered for a while just in case.

Wow I'm still torn between these two hehehe :cheesy::Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
And I don't plan to upgrade for a while, I'm not a DP.

My D100 is 6 megapixels, and it's pretty rare that I find myself wanting or needing more. Soon I'll move up to a D300 (if its replacement isn't out by then!) but in the meantime you really don't need that much resolution for most uses.

Do you do alot of cropping? I'd guess that with cropping the more MP's might come in handy, I suppose.

Yeah, it would. It's pretty rare, though (maybe 5%) that I find I really want to drastically crop an image. And even then it's only an issue if I want to print it larger than 8x10 or so. You know what they say: do it right the first time (ie, when you click the shutter)!

Thanks for the help...I decidec on the D60 because the kit lens is also VR so that's a plus....and I don't really want to upgrade for a few years, at least.

It's using the D80 sensor so that's not a bad thing, I guess...I do know that more megapixels do not equal better pictures, but you never know what you might need to do. I also agree that there's no need to crop if you take pics correctly.

Now justifying $229 and putting it towards a better lens is a better idea, but I don't plan to get another lens for a few months...I'm just starting out with photography.

hey guys l love this site. i have the new d 60 and i love it. i will be putting up pic as soon as i get

Alright, I went out Tuesday and just shot a TON of stuff, so this post is a little lengthy in pics, but here are my faves. All were taken (and many extremely up close) with a 20mm lens (ranging from f1.8 to f22 depending on photo).

BELOW: Totally overexposed I know, but something about it just works for me, so I kept it. Also there's this great bug on one petal that luckily was pretty much spot on the focal point, so below this photo is a detailed bit of the image at it's original resolution.

I was very happy with this day. I felt wuite productive and think I got some good stuff, so, while I'm feeling all positive-like, I offer, if anyone out there would like a full res (10.2MP) version of one of these for desktop background purposes, just send me a PM. Grazi.

And, lastly, that same day I snapped these two of my fiancee. The first is with an 85mm at f2, the second with a 135mm at f2.8.

Which 20mm did you take those flower shots with? Because I used to use a 20mm f/2.8 AF and it had close-focus problems... you must be using something else!

I used the sigma 20mm f1.8, although I've decided to return it and invest in a wide zoom for numerous long thought out reasons.

It has its strengths and its weaknesses. It's obviously very bright for a wide. A bit bulky though (82mm threads on the front). I can't see any problems vignetting or with soft edge to edge, but then again my digital's sensor is like most (only 23.6x15.8mm, instead of a full 36x24) which saves me from those issues. A definite strength IS it's ability to focus VERY close up. It's funny, the tech specs on it state the minimum focusing distance being 20cm (7.9 inch), but I can guarantee you I focused on objects MUCH closer than that. Odd. One thing, when used completely open, at f1.8, in focus areas (when you zoom in & look up close) are still a little soft around the edges, they have sort of this slight glow to them. It's something I've heard you get with cheaper glass, and Sigma's reputation revolves more around it's affordability then it's quality. That being said though, this lens, new, costs around $400 wherever you look. If you find a store online that has it listed for about $350, after you call them, they'll mention that they nolonger have it in stock, will have to special order it, and you'll then pay the same as anywhere else, roughly $400. Used is about the same cost, since it isn't too easy to come by, and the MSRP on Sigma's site is $530.

I WOULD recommend it to people though as a decent and very bright wide prime, and if that's what you're looking for I'd say stop looking.

I didn't intend to give an all out review. Sorry about the long read. Hope it was informative.

No, thanks, that's cool. I've got my 17-35mm now which I'm extremely happy with (it's the most expensive glass I own, so I hope so!), and I've got the 55mm for close work... I was just curious because I remember having such a hard time focusing in close with that Nikon 20mm.

Actually all of my glass now is Nikon, after some bad experiences with a handful of Sigmas and Tamrons. But maybe I should revisit a few of them. Although the only lens I really want these days is the 70-200mm AF-S VR...

Okay, I promise this'll be the last picture of me-olde-lady friend I post for some time to come. But still, I think it turned out well.
