All shot with Nikon D100 + 20-35mm f2.8 combo. I used an SB-28dx for lighting.

Great photos, I really like the softness and the way the smoke moves up in the air.
It reminds me of some 3d app promo that I saw sometime ago.

Hi guys, I am new to site as well as my D200 and DVX 100A.
I must tell you, seen the few pictures that I could see in this tread, has given me a boost. I have never taken a class, I still do not know the meaning of f stop and why, when, or where it should be use. I am from NY, but I am in Africa for a few days and than to Paris before getting back to NY. Here is what I feel is my best shot to date.

I just copy the Information, I have no clue what it means.
If any of you can tell me what I did from did not do to make this shot. I would like to take shots as good as this are better.
I will be in pairs on the 27th. I am thinking of of taking one of those 8 hour tours. so if you all can make me take better pictures, I will make you all proud.

Joh. If you have access to the web, you really need to study up on what is what, especially if you are out in africa then to paris. Beautiful sites! The most important stuff you need to know is the F Stop and Shutter Speed. You figure these out, then you can shoot in the Manual Mode of the D200. Check out the tutorials on the first page of the still photography forum, in the tutorials page.

I will give a quick run down:
The higher the shutter speed. The faster motion that you can capture. The slower the more blur you are going to get if you shoot a moving image. A slower shutter speed i.e. 1/60th of a second exposes the sensor longer than a 1/200th of a second. If you are shooting action like moving vehicles, animals, etc...you want to aim for a high shutter speed. I generally dont like to shoot anything moving without having at least a 1/250th.

F-Stop:
The higher the F-Stop, more things are in focus. The only problem with that is when you are at a higher F-Stop i.e. F 22, the less light makes it to the sensor. So it forces you to go with a slower shutter speed, which might not be bad in some cases. (non-action)

The lower the f-stop, less things are in focus. When you are at a lower f-stop i.e. 5.6 with proper lighting conditions, lets you go above and beyond with your shutter speed letting you capture fast moving subjects. But beware, because of the lower the F Stop, the less depth of focus. But the D200 is pretty on with it's AF.

I tried to give you the basic break down of this. But please read more and look at more diagrams and photos to get a better idea. Once you have this figured out, you will be producing some beautiful images. By the way good start with the lizard. Try to use manual to after you are done learning these things. It will really test your ability. Please let me know if you understand! I really wish you good luck with your photography and your trip. Enjoy!

Apature doesn't affect focus. You must have meant depth of field?

apart from that very minor mistake in terms, you gave a great breakdown.

joh, learn about the rule of thirds, composition, the relationship of Shutter and Apature as well as ISO ratings, and lastly, color theory. Especially the color theory if you plan on tweaking your pics in Photoshop.

Read through this part of the forum extensively. Much of what you need to know is here.

Nice pic by the way. I would take the lizard pic, create a Hue and Saturation adjustment layer in Phothshop, and use the layer mask that it automatically come with it to selectively desaturate some of the backround, making the lizard (evil little thing, by the looks of it), stand out.

Thanks guys, I understand the break down that both of you gave.
do you have any links to post in this forum that is a must read. between my dvx100A and the D200, I am been over loaded. LOL
Thank you all for your input.

Here is a few more I took from a moving car

I was happy with all of these pictures until I came to this site.

Alv,
I love your images. The that I see is that her lens frame is sitting lower then her eyes so it creates a weird looking line above her eyes. If you catch my drift. It almost cuts off her eyes, that is what I think I am trying to say LoL. Awesome other wise!

well, this one is not recent, or artsy; but it will raise an eyebrow. this is from a few years ago when half a mobile home parked in front of our driveway.

Jposinditos-

I really dig your photography. I've often seen you use the 'facial grunge look' here and in other pics showcasing a horn player. Could you please shed a little light on how you get that effect?

Rick
