Nikon User Thread

I think i just realized a stupid mistake i made.
I got my D50 with a 50mm lens (thats including the stock lens)
Like a week later, i got a 24mm wide angle lens.
I am now realizing the stock lens get a wider shot than the 24mm making the 24mm useless i think?
Now am i wrong here? B&H allows 14 to return which is gone by now. But i really want to trade this thing in for and sb-600 and some filters.
What do ya'll think?

Welcome to the never ending (or so it seems) thread, Blaine.

Thanks. I should have a "water" picture up by Monday. I've got a really busy weekend starting tomorrow but I'm going to take my camera with me...to the beach (Long Beach)

You can see what they'll give you... I'm wondering why you went with that lens? For architecture or something? I mean it's certainly a nice lens... and 2.8 is great... but how did you actually pick it out? I'm curious.

Well, as i posted before the job im curently working for paid for my d50 and lenses.
I got the camera and 50mm lens first, then about a week later they said they had a surplus and that if i wanted anything to act on it within the next 5 min.
note: At that time i wasnt to knowledgeable on lenses and flashes.
So i saw the word wide angle, saw it was smaller in size than the stock lens, didnt really pay attention to what i was buying and got the lens.
Stupid stupid stupid.
lol, glad it wasnt my money though. hopefully i can get at least 200, so i can get a sb600 and polarizer.

I would have said... Oh yeah, this job won't turn out right without a Sigma 180mm APO Macro... we gotta' have that.

If you get $200 for it you can get the sb-600... but after shipping your green will be too lean for the polarizer. $200 will do it for the fl*sh...

here's another of my santa barbara shots. i am out of town for the weekend but i have the d50 with me and i am going to try to get a good water shot for this week's thing...

Great shot!

Nice shot cheeze.

The house should be larger in the shot. The sunset and colors are fantastic, and the railroad tracks which draw the eye really work. But the house seems distractingly underscored.

I'de take the original and resize the house up quite a bit. Really give something to where the eye is being drawn.

care to share your settings?

all factory settings. shot as jpeg large/high. i usually shoot raw but that day i only had one mem card with me so i wdidn't want to run out of space. basic stuff in photoshop. USM, curves, levels.

rapier: the house would look cool bigger and i have some closer shots of it but for this i wanted it to be off in the distance. i thought it was cool the way these tracks draw your eye way off into the horizon and then you notice this house which may have been missed if not for the tracks.

Yes but in this instance, the house is almost a non-entitiy. Seriously, either remove it entirely, or make it larger. I think you will be suprisingly pleased with the feel.

It's so small, the fact that it is a strutcure almost becomes meaningless.

If nothing else, maybe adjust the levels and lightness of the house to bring it out. It blends with the rocks to such a degree as to make it just kind of "there" instead of a potential focal point. There really is not enough detail to bring it out from the background, and so even with the tracks bringing you there, there's nothing there. Sounds odd, I suppose.

But hell, it's your pic, do whatcha want. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

wow breathtaking.. good work!

do you guys want seperate sections for Canon/Nikon etc?

I don't know if we really need it because I think all the Nikon users have sort of joined this thread and we all know that the focus of this site is our DVX (or an HVX if we own one)... I just don't think it is necessary, then again, searching this thread wouldn't be the easiest thing in the world.

yeah i wasnt sure... 50 friggin pages and it kinda looks like it may be time.

might be nice to add some sort of gallery for each of you.

Gotta get more people in here... understanding still photography is so important to filmmaking.
