Below is my photo for the "where i live" challenge. It's a shot from my balcony, so it's a real 'where i live' photo

I am sure that everyone will find something useful in your words! Great help written in a great way! Thank you very much!!TheYankee said:Wow! I am completely amazed, inspired, and in awe of what everyone has submitted and that we all actually did this. I think it's amazing.

Like: I love the overall composition. You presented a familiar landmark of massive cultural awareness and displayed it in a new exciting way that caused me to do a double take as to what I was looking at. The coulds add a feeling or urgency and really make me feel like I am falling into a surreal dream watching the world spin by. The blown highlights on the sign as well as the tower normally would turn me off, but for this image I think they enhance the image by adding to that surreal sense of emotion.
Dislikes: Other than it being a freaking huge image? I really would like to see more detail in the hill because then you can complete that earth and sky contrast. Maybe a little sharpening. Overall, it is just hard to find anything that doesn't excite me about this image.

Likes: I love the noise and super gamma throughout the image, and think that your image really screams modern art. The capturing of the scientology sign just adds so much more to this image, making you smile as well as giving some meaning to the 60's acid trip colors. I love the contrasting elements displayed from the mirror, tree, sign, street, sunlgasses.
Dislikes: I struggle with identifying the focal point in the image. Part of me believes it is the scientology sign while I am also drawn to the rear view mirror and the image contained within. The only suggestion I might be able to offer would be if you're having the mirror be the focal point, keep that part of the image looking like a normal photograph reflected in this amazing and color filled world you created.

Likes: I love the angle you got. You can really sense this person's descent into this heavy shadowed and mysterious path. The fact that there are two choices of paths also awakes the English Degree within me. Furthermore, your subject's attire along with the book really gives this image a sense of magical strangeness in a world of complete reality.
Dislike: The only area of improvement I can identify with this image is that it looks a little flat and lacks some depth (even with the leaf up front to the right). I would just add some more contrast and maybe sharpen the image to make the folliage come alive.

Likes: Well seeing as how I was checking these out at work this image made me hide my browser real quick, which cracked me up. I love the angle, the composition, and the overall image. I think that this is an incredible picture that actually says a lot. What it says I think will be filtered... But it made me think and it's like a trainwreck, I'm afraid of someone coming up behind me to check it out but I can't turn away.
Dislike: There is nothing to really not like in this image, so the only constructive criticism I can offer is that it looks a little flat. I would sharpen the image to make the different elements stand out and then add some contrast. Might also play with the sky, but just post processing, nothing with the image acquisition.

Likes: The sharpness and detail in your foreground subject against the soft background is almost hauntingly powerfull. I stared at that horse head for 5 minutes just amazed that man can create something so unique. This image against the conflicting urban and nature elements it just a beautiful contradition of life. I really like the way you used your background to enhance your subject. Great image.
Dislike: There is nothing with the image that I would change with post processing, composition, or subject matter. I think it is great image... Sorry, I really looked for something to be constructive about.

Likes: This reminds me of one of those MC Escher drawings. There is so much detail within the wood and the sky that I am overwhelmed viewing this image. I love the dutch angle that you have used to create a sense of uneasy comfort. This is something I would hang on my wall.
Dislike: The only thing constructive I can offer is that because of the different elements of your image I struggle for a specific focal point. My eye follows the staircase to the sky, which is a great use of symbalism, but I am distracted by the cloverleafs on the bannisters. I wouldn't change it, but I really like this image.

Likes: This image just kept going down and down and down. The length is amazing and with all of the action and buildings at the top the composition is beautiful. I think that an image like this is also perfect material for a black and white composition. I love the lines of the building, power lines, street, sidewalk, curb.
Dislike: Well I had to download the image and load it into MS Photo Editor to be able to see it all, and the only area of critique I can offer that might be beneficial is the white fence at the very bottom. It is distracting and conflicts with everything else. I would have cropped that out. Great image.

Likes: It made me laugh right away, brotha! I think it is a great wide shot, with so much detail. If I didn't know you, and know it was you I could just see this farmer living in his field and this being his life. The detail in the image is great and where you placed yourself really works great for that rule of thirds thing.
Dislike:The only criticism I can offer is the blowout on your shoulder becomes a focal point. Overall a great shot and something that if it was posted in the cafe would become photoshop fodder. Where is Pookie when you need him.

I offer my opinion as a complete amatuer with no experience other than typing out what I see and feel when I look at these images. Hopefully some of the things I said help make better images or made you feel good about the job you did.
Maybe we can make a new topic/poll in every challenge. Something like: Nikon D50/D70 PhotoChallenge 1, next: Nikon D50/D70 PhotoChallenge 2 etc... so everyone (not only us that we read this thread) will be able to vote.TheYankee said:QUESTION:
So how do we decide who wins and gets to choose next week's assignment?
Great job, I'm really impressed by what everyone did and ashamed of my entry now.

Just a thought..
I agree. This will help us to know how other people from other places with other experiences feel about our photos. And will make us better for sure.TheYankee said:Well here is a voting idea... I mean the prize is you get to choose what we do next... Just list your top two in order. Say #1: Hudson Shot 1, #2: Barry Green Shot 1. And then we'll tally them all up and who ever has the most votes wins and chooses the next subject. You get 2pts for a first place and 1 pts for a second place vote and you cannot vote for yourself.
I don't think it's personal or anything and it's nothing anyone is going to get hard feelings about, just a simple 1st and 2nd and that gives us enough participants and votes to move forward.
This is for fun and to help us focus on shooting...
What do ya'll think of that method?
