Nikon User Thread

I PM'd Isaac to change this thread to D50/D70 since the camera's are so similar and we have so many users with both cameras!

Should mean a lot more pictures and conversation... wait, we already have that :)

you guys have convinced me to dabble around with the "raw format" I'm shooting with a d-70, I've shot a couple raw images now when I go to import them into photoshop cs, it reads. "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document". There .nef files, I know it's probably stated somewhere in the forum, I'm on 14k bear with me.

Thanks!

Right here.

I'm surprised more people aren't using the Raw feature. If you shoot Jpeg you're throwing away tons of information and limitting how far you can push your images in Photoshop. Once you go raw, you can't go back. :)

It is benificial to work in RAW whether you shoot with a d50 or d70... mainly because of extra information (as stated earlier). But it's less of a big deal with the d50 because yes, the d50 does damn near perfect pictures as jpeg right out of the camera. The d50 has superior auto WB and better dynamic range. So it's less of an issue.

Okay now the other side. If you want to push your pics around and treat your shots like negatives, and still maintain as much quality and detail as possible... then you need to shoot RAW with either camera. RAW is like a negative... a high quality jpeg is still a jpeg and after playing around with that file and saving back as a jpeg again you are introducing digital artifacts and affecting the quality of the end result. For most work this won't matter... but I'm just going to get in the habit of working in RAW so that I know that my shots are as good as they can get.

In Nikon Capture RAW files remain intact... you do all your processing and then save a copy of the work with the processing added right at the end. The original RAW file is still there... all pristine and sterile... and you can come back to it later if you like... so then you take that final processed shot and send it into PS as a TIFF or whatever... or maybe even still as RAW? However you want to do it, you still have a "negative" to work with... even after you already "pushed it around" in Capture.

This is why I'm going that route... but I wish there was something better then Capture... and I'm thinking it may be Bibble or something like that... so far I'm not sure. With programs like RAW Magick Lite it's not such a big deal to get special curves in camera any more. You can play with curves in RAW format and have the program apply it to the RAW shot as if the camera saw it that way in the first place! So then when you send your shot to PS for other detail work there's no surprises about the colorspace.

My head hurts from trying to learn all this as fast as I can... I've been seeing some of the most stunning photography in the past few weeks... been scouring other forums for all the knowledge I can... and man is there ever a lot to find!

Yep. There's an overwhelming amount of knowledge out there. So much that you just sort of have to get familiar with the cams basics and go out there and shoot and shoot and shoot.

does anyone know how many actuations the d50 shutter is good for? and what the process is to get it reset or refurbed when it passes that point? i have been doing some timelapse with mine and it occured to me today that i'm snapping like 500 times in a single sitting. probably 3000 times in the last week.....

Well this is more photoshop at this point than D50, but it was shot on the 18-55mm lens...

And then screwed with until my body told me it was time to go to the bathroom.

I like that Jeremy. I like the cutout look. Not sure about the red border, but the composition is nice.

Her face and the areas of it where the eye is drawn to are covered somewhat by the grunge/spots.

They don't seem to quite fit her mood. She looks content.

But the cutaway thing is nice. That's a cool way to frame a shot. I wish I would have thought of that.

Thanks for the comments guys... I'd like to say that I thought of this idea for her in the rain all by myself, but alas, I cannot say that. I was bumming around through some photography sites and came across this link
which linked me up with a tutorial and just sort of worked my way through it. I went completely over the top with the burning and all that, but overall, I hate to say it, but I'm sort of liking this picture. I think if I had done this to a different picture and used the same steps I might be happier with the end result, but the frame was essentially just ripping this guys idea off.

Creativity police: "Nothing original to see here, move along" :)

I'm at least getting a little better with photoshop though, I think.

Finally got my cam... d70s w/ 85 1.8... no flash, no photoshop at all, jpeg straight from cam resized. Personally I would NEVER have put this up here, but a friend said it was worth posting... I'm still getting used to the cam... this pic was taken within 2 hours of UPS dropping off the box.

This guy is NOT emotional... he was being silly and making various faces of high emotion...

The only reason I'm putting this up is 'cause it's true to the spirit of "first pics" as we've been posting them... I was going to wait a couple of days and show something that's actually really good... but I guess this is okay to post.

looks a bit soft. maybe the jpeg compression? anything below 80% to me softens too much. i see that the DOF is super shallow but it appears that his bangs are in focus....

how is that d70? you like?

ok, here's a really stupid picture but i'm posting it anyway. i was playing around with melting things doing some timelapse with the dvx and i thought this was interesting, yet stupid, so here ya go.

I love the lighting in that shot cheezweezl. There is something very simple about it that also is just really wicked. I'd be curious to see how the timelapse ends up coming together as well. It looks really nice and just very professional. What did you use to light this set up?

Matt, I like this shot. It actually looks to me more like a portrait shot than some sort of staged or planned shot. While the focus on the face is a bit soft, I think for a completely raw image straight out of the camera this is still a really great shot. I like how clean the image is plus it looks to me like this glass is super sharp, just not on this shot. With a little photoshop and some USM this could be an amazing image. I think what really gets me about this image and why I am such a fan of it right away is that with this shot your subject is perfectly framed in the image and his facial expression has that sort of tortured look to it. I just think he's a great subject and it's a solid shot. I want to see what you can do with this after a little photoshop, but that is an amazing first image out of a new camera. Looks great!

Today I brought my camera to work so I'm going to shoot a bunch of things on that 50mm 1.8 and post some stuff tonight during the All Star game to show ya'll what an amazing lense this is and how sharp it is right away. This is a $100 lens that just boggles the mind.

See why I didn't want to post that shot man? Take a look at Cheezweezl's shot there! That's why I said I'm not ready to put up any pics yet! Cheez, that is a freakin' great shot... your photos are really good. Was the cam on a tripod for that shot?

Also... for a certain somebody who was concerned that maybe he should have got a d70s instead of d50... do you see my point now? What do you think goes through my head when I see shots like Cheez has there? Trust me... TRUST ME on this... I WANTED to get the d50... I honestly think it makes the best images of the two cameras if all things are equal (light, glass, settings)... I think the d50 is THE best image you can get under a grand! The ONLY, and I mean the ONLY reason I went with the d70s is for the features... that's it man. I wanted the gridlines, the flash control, and the lighted info panel. As soon as Nikon releases the D80 or whatever they make which includes the features of the d70s and combines that with the image quality of the d50... I'll sell my cam on ebay at a loss and buy the new cam.

EDIT: Also I should add that the photographer is the most important part of the camera system. That will make the biggest difference in the end result... but still, even though the d70s is noisy compared to the d50 I like it... one thing that I like about my pic there is the white balance seems pretty close. This was under standard flo lighting (low cri cheap crap) and I think it's pretty accurate. Also moving subject, handheld at 1.8...

Dude, cheeze's shot is wicked, it's nicely lit and it is a good studio staged shot. I think it looks great.

That doesn't change the fact that I like the shot you posted. I think that there is something that works with it, and on top of that, it's bad ass that it is straight out of the camera.

Why is it that we always hate the work that we do and can only see the flaws in it?

thanks you guys. the setup was pretty simple. white posterboard held up by a mic stand and taped to a road case on the bottom end. the red stuff is a melted candle from the previous shot. the egg is of the care bears variety left over from easter. there was just one light from the top, side and back. 60w aluminum bowl. here's a pic of the setup shot with my cheesy casio.

i'll post the timelapse video later today. it actually didn't come out that great but whatev...
