Nikon User Thread

Just had to freaking do it... Another picture of my brother, burned, dodged, levels, contrast, lots of **** going on here. PSD so you can check out what I did.

EDIT:

And just because I was feeling inspired by Joey Lawrence's new pictures, here is that same image with a little grunge thrown in there and the PSD for how I did it... Not the greatest example of grunge though.

I couldn't get many decent pictures of birds when I went to the Raptor Center, so I thought I would go for something with a little meaning. I think that this could use a lot more work, but I'm still happy with the result. Shot on the 18-70mm Lens, I love this piece of glass. Great bokeh

Whats the best way to white balance?
the dvx had that one button, but all i can see here are the presets.
and anyone know of any flash photography tutorial sites?
I was taught to not use flash, but i want to buy one eventually. right now im using the camera flash.
Oh and for all you photoshopers, how do you apply a vignette to your photo?
Thanks.

Just a couple of more images I thought I would share...

The way you talk about that 70-210 sometimes... I keep thinking something's wrong with it... then you post and the shots look good. That lens has nice bokeh. I'm also glad to seet that the 18-70 looks really good. Finally... I'm sure you mean 18-55 on those other shots unless you really bought the 17-55. ;-)

The shots look good... and here I am looking at two lenses and no camera. The 85 1.8 came yesterday and just by looking at it you can tell that it's going to take some great shots. It's all metal, buttery smooth, 9-blade iris... and at 1.8 it's like looking out a porthole on a ship. The DOF on that thing is gonna' be sick. Too bad I can't show you any pics yet. :-(

I forgot to add that yesterday... in one day... I find a tiny baby squirrel in the middle of the yard when mowing... took care of him all day... got him to a "squirrel rehabber"... fireworks last night and ORANGE lightening striking all through the display... I kept hearing people say, "Have you ever seen anything like this?" Several other cool photo ops during the day... it was like the world was playing tricks on me since I didn't have the cam.

What do you mean? I thought your camera arrived the other day?

Thanks for the compliments. I'm actually going out to go shooting in a little while. I found this place where you can get 11x17 posters for $12, so I really want to reshoot that decaying leaf again, if I can find another. I just think that would be a cool thing to have on my wall.

Yeah, it is the 18-55, the D50 kit lens. I've actually been loving the 18-70. I don't think it is miles sharper than the D50 kit lens, but it is a nice piece of glass. The 18-55 is a faster focusing lens, but the 18-70 is a sharper lens.

I want a macro lens, but that's going to take just a little while longer.

Chris, how come you haven't posted anything in a while?

And just a couple more. These are from today...

I still don't know how I feel about these, but these were all on the 18-70mm.

Chris... put your d50 in 1600 ISO and then shoot some shadowy areas... see if you see any hot-red pixels or red streaks... I had an odd anomoly in my sensor and it would display that... always in the same spot on a pic and only in 1600 ISO... but one of the major reasons I went with the d50 over the d70s is the lack of high ISO noise... so having a visible red line in the shot was kind of working against my intentions.

I was going to simply exchange the cam... but I decided (after shooting in nearly dark conditions) that the lighted info panel may be more important to me then I originally thought (and perhaps some other features of the 70)... so I called and they said that I could do a pay/difference exchange, but they failed to mention that all of a sudden the 70s were impossible to find... so anyway... I'm going to wait at least until the end of the day tomorrow... but if by Thu they don't say they have a 70 on the way to me I guess I'm just going to stick with the 50 afterall. At this point I'm willing to take the noise risk of the 70 for the other stuff it does.

I've got the 85 1.8 and the 18-70 ready to go... and all I got out of them is a few crappy experimental shots that I did right when I got the cam and discovered the red line.

So nothing to post yet. Trust me I'm getting really anxious. Since this store said it was no problem to do the exchange I've got my fingers crossed that it will go through tomorrow... but I looked at their site and there 'aint no d70s available... it blows my mind that there were plenty of either just last week when I placed my order. Being the OCD moron that I am I would have felt like I made the wrong choice no matter which way I chose... that's a fact... but now that I had a problem with the 50 it would be easy for me to feel comfortable going the other way... so I hope that's what happens... tomorrow.

some fireworks shots from the rose bowl in pasadena a couple hours ago. traffic sucked so i had to shoot from far away. i still only have the kit lens so even though i was at the long end it was only 80mm. a 300mm would have been nice....

all shot at 1 sec shutter at f7

Those are actually some of the coolest fireworks shots I've seen... very artistic. I can see why Nikon is selling the d50 by the millions... the cam just seems to conjure up great images. Not taking anything away from you... but with your complaint of not having the right lens it's apparent that these shots were compromised in your view... and yet I think they look good... as if this was the intention.

If you'd have had a friend there you could have used rear curtain sync on the flash... that is an awesome feature in times like this... but unless you knew the guy there it's better that he's ambiguous.

The middle shot is the best. (my .02)

cheezweezl, amazing shots that you have there. I was actually filming a promo last night for a fireworks company here in town and the whole time I just kept thinking, I should be taking some pictures right now. Those are great shots you got though and I like the fact that they are so wide, just really puts you in the event and the moment.

thanks guys. fireworks are kinda tough. you really have to hit it at just the right time to get it. out of 100+ shots, i got three good ones....
