Im not to knowledgeable on lenses so i need some advice.
I want a lens that i can shoot portriats with like the 50mm prime, but gives me more room to work with close up but still give me the shallow depth of field and sharpness the 50mm does.
so something like me being able to shoot from the waist up from lke 2-5 feet away with the specifications i listed above. or full body shots.

any advice?
Thanks!!!

This picture is dedicated to Brandon, because he just loves Christmas.
It's supposed to be a tree there.

Well you're pretty much talking about a do it all lens.

For portraits if I am shooting with primes then I either use a 28mm, 50mm, or 85mm. Sometimes I will also use a 105mm. That's a pretty huge range of glass...

For portraits, if I am shooting with zooms, I like the 17-55 or 70-210 f/2.8's. Each one of these individually costs more than all those primes (28mm @ 2.8, 50mm @ 1.8, 85mm @ 1.8, & 105mm @ 2.8) so there is a huge trade off there.

Then again, there is the 18-200 VR II. This is a great piece of glass with nice bokeh... Then again this is a $750 piece of glass that you can't find and used copies go for $900-$1000 on Ebay.

In general, the lens I would most recommend is one of my two favorite lenses:
Expensive: 17-55 f/2.8 @ $1400. It is heavy, long, but super sharp, very flatering, doesn't vigenette anywhere, and is just the first piece of glass I turn to for most of my non prime shooting.
Cheap: 18-70 3.0-4.6 DX @ $300. It is light, cheap, and plastic but it is super sharp and has an amazing zoom range. Some distortion at the wide range and a very short throw on the wide zoom spectrum (18-24mm) but it is sharp and it is an ideal walk around lens.

So that's sort of it...

I can't access myspace from work so I can't check those...

I'm guessing that it is just a sharp subject and a blurry background similar to this portrait I did a while back (note: the framing on this subject sucks and he is cut at the joints but the background is what I'm refering to)

That was on a cheap $200 nikon 4.0-5.6 70-210mm lens... You most likely just need something long to shoot on.

It's actually an IR shot from late this past summer and then the R & G channels swapped in PS. I like IR stuff though.

Jeremy your IR photo is just wonderful! I have the hoya R72 IR filter too, but i haven't spent time with this yet. Is it posible to tell me your photoshop technique with your IR photos? I think that it's time to start using it and i would love to achieve similar results.

Thank you very very much in advance.

Your IR rocks!!

Yeah... I wasn't about to tell you to go searching but earlier in this thread I made a post about EXACTLY how to achieve the IR results that I do.

I don't tweek my IR that much anymore, in fact, I have it all set up for an action in Photoshop. Literally, I batch process everything with the action that is in this post and just review those.

That is how the above IR was done, just batch processed and nothing else.

There is the post with all the information, link to the action I wrote, and everything else. Enjoy, IR is a ton of fun and pretty cheap to get started with.

Dude, that post was burried some 400 posts ago, don't worry about it.

I think when it comes to photography, processing techniques, or just knowledge in general it is better to share and help others acheive the same results rather than keep secrets and hope that something big happens.

Have fun with IR, it can open up a whole new world of work, especially once you get into IR portraits...

Jeremy I freakin' love that IR shot! That is your best one yet.

Hey a couple pages back I must have been buzzed when I tried to say that the Nikon is a chick magnet. Somebody didn't get my point, but then rustyfingas popped in (man ALL your stuff is golden)... anyway... here's the girl of the week... ahem, thanks to the Nikon.
