Side note, someone here pointed me to a CS2 update to suport raw .nef files for mac but the path they show on intalling the plug-in file is different from the path i see on my comp. Can anyone tell me what folder the plug-in file is supossed to go in?
Thanks,

Here's some really generic crap from "the butterfly house" which is what it sounds like... not too far from my house... maybe 20 min.

I took the flash with me and held it in one hand and held the cam in the other hand... then snapped at something like 1/400 with the 85 1.8... my only ***** is that the red flowers in this first shot look funny because the flash was lower then the lens and that made 'em look really fake... overall I think it's an okay shot... but let's be honest... this is generic crap... still I thought it was good enough to post it. I have been very happy with my cam... but my pics have a little ways to go... I'd like to post shots of hot chicks or drama... or a mix of the two...

This shot is borderline boring... but I actually like it better because of the leaves... there was a really huge metallic blue butterfly... and one with black and metallic green stripes... and those two bastids teased me the entire time.... I can post some little shots of those guys flying, but I never could get a lock on 'em...

I love the fact that the D70 can do up to 1/500 flash sync. Sorry to say the D80 won't be able to so this.

Matt, desaturate the backgrounds slightly and the butterflys will pop a little more.

Try red!
Your spider will become the famous Chameleon-DVXuser-Butterfly! :D

Seriously now, i like much better your edited version, because your target and DOF doesn't have the same color as in the original.

What's up party people? Well, I'm back from my trip, and what a freaking trip it was. I took over 2000 pictures, and as soon as I figure out how to get everything off the laptop I was putting the pictures on I will have a ton of things to post.

Just a couple of things that I learned:

1. Always bring a polarizer - I didn't bring mine and this really hurt a lot of my images, especially the wide shots I was taking at Yankee Stadium.

2. Wide Angle is very important - Well not all of us are as talented as Rapier with creating panaramics, so a wide angle is really important. I've never been a huge fan of shooting super wide, like 18mm, but when there is a lot that you want to shoot that wide lens is really super important. I can see myself investing in something else super wide for future use.

3. NY Camera Stores are Shady - While bumming around the city I just had to walk into some of these stores to just pick their brains about grey market goods. They all deny it but after you push long enough they admit it and then push you out the door. I got some cheap laughs out of it.

4. B&H is Insane - C'mon, we all read their catalog like it is porn but the store is freaking insane. I didn't get to play with an HVX because there wasn't one on display, but I did get to play with a couple of macro lenses and got to throw a massive 500mm VR lens on my D50. My camera looked so small on that lens (notice: not the lens on my camera), but this was just awesome. Those super zooms are bad ass. B&H also is just a kick ass store in general and I want them to let me move in there.

5. 2 Gig Cards Req'd - Between family, friends, the city, and the ball games I took thousands of pictures. Those 2 Gig cards, at least 2 of them (I carried 2x 2 gig cards, 1 1gig card, 1 512meg card) and there were days when I think I could have run through them all.

6. UV filters on every lens should be law - I brought with me a 2.8 24mm manual lens for some stuff and didn't have a UV filter on it... That lens is dead now, but at least I owned two of them.

7. Fast Glass Rules - I tried to get some shots of the city from across the river and without a tripod I kept having to increase the ISO and lay the camera down. Fast glass is really important. In fact, at the Baseball Hall of Fame I couldn't take many pictures because the light it so bad, I didn't have a polarizer, and most importantly, 1.8 wasn't really fast enough to get good images without shake even at 800 ISO. It isn't exactly ideal lighting in there.

8. Filters vs Lens - I got myself an infrared R72 filter at B&H. I had looked at IR photography and always wanted to try it, and now I feel like I have a whole new lens. The ability to really play with this glass in front of my glass is just incredible and filters open up a whole new definition of what is possible. I'm going to play with some IR stuff for a while, as soon as I learn how to CC it.

9. Tripods are important to bring - I didn't have a tripod or a monopod, therefore a lot of my shots aren't as sharp as they could have been.

10. Walk Around Lens - I don't have that 18-200mm VR lens, and most of the time was either packing the 18-70 & 70-200mm or the 18-70mm & 1.8 50mm with me (my camera bag is for camera + 1 more lens. Walk around lenses for tourist stuff would have been much nicer and lighter. Now I'm thinking about that glass again, too bad they don't make it in a constant 2.8 or something, because I really love fast glass.

Well that is sort of what I learned. As soon as I figure out how to get these images off this laptop I'm going to have a freaking field day posting stuff, but let me see what I can do. I wish I had a huge jump drive or that this laptop had a DVD burner. This is going to suck...

When are we setting the deadline for the 'Where you live' photo contest thing? I was going to go out tomorrow and take some shots for it.

-Jeremy

I don't know the deadline either... you guys decide... and as for the 18-200vr that's impossible to find... well if you wanted one and found this post, and can afford one... you probably have about a day to get your order in. They shipped and a couple of stores have them... adorama says only $719 for theirs! (mention the flyer)

Yeah it's really tempting isn't it? The 18-70 is gonna' have to do for me for now though... but yeah, 200mm would cover pretty much anything that I need to do, but in my case I'd rather have (2) sb-800 flashes then the 18-200vr... wish I could get both.

But then again I gotta' agree with number 7... in my experience a lack of light is usually more inhibiting then a lack of reach... which is why I said I'm prioritizing flashes, but I wish I could afford both.

I can't wait to see your pics... isn't it funny how 2 gig sounded like so much space before? With a digital cam you can never have too much storage... since there's no film cost I'll shoot the same object 10x if I have to.

Diggin' the guitar Ipo... I wish I could play...

Rapier I'm going to do some natural light experimentation... I'm intrigued by properly exposed shots made with normal light sources... I like flash also, when it's good, but I have a saying that I stick with r.e. photography... light is everything.

You mean like the one I posted and then quickly took down a few days ago?

ANd yeah, lighting is everyting, but a flash IS lighting, so hmmm.

I have been doing experiments with etremely long shutter and very low light sources. THings come out odd, and at times almost unnatural looking. But cool, none the less.

I am in the process of going through the thousands of shots I took, so not a lot to share right away, but I thought I would post this original and corrected:

For you color correcting guru's. How do you strenghen your blacks?
I want to mess with some B&W photos and better my color photos.
I love the baseball stadium Yankee, how do you make your colors pop so well?

I didn't play with the gamma at all. I started with a levels adjustment, then a little S curve. From that point I went to the selective color adjustment and tweaked each color to how I wanted it to look. Added a little contrast, a little more levels, USM, resize.

Hope that answers your questions.

-Jeremy

That is bad ass. What did the shadows in the original look like?

I took this one on my porch a few minutes ago and just tweaked levels real quick and did a resize... Winter in the Carolina's in July...

EDIT:

A second porch shot... I like taking pictures on my porch. Both of these were shot on the 18-70mm lens.

try stacking your infrared and your polarizer together... see what you get.

It's funny that we were just talking about infrared a while back... and now here it is... I should get one for all the cornfields and old barns within a few miles of here.

I don't know what you're talking about with infrared... It really snowed and I shot it.

I'm going to stack them together now and see what I get. I'll post the results in a few.

-Jeremy

EDIT:

Yeah, that makes things a lot sharper... I just took a couple of test shots, the problem is that my polarizer is now on a step down ring (67-72) so hence the problems that I need to zoom past. I'll post in a few, but they are a lot better, thanks for the tip.

By The Way... Big News

By The Way... Big News

I went to compusa yesterday and for $10 they have a USB 2.0 card reader, so you don't have to keep plugging your camera into the computer. I think it works great, plus it made it a lot easier to get the pictures off my laptop. It is really tiny and works great, just FYI.

-Jeremy

OK, these have been processed very quickly, but I like the way they look. They are just sort of funky and give a nice little vibe. The way the glass works is Nikon 18-70mm, B&W UV Filter, Hoya R72 IR filter, 67-72mm Step up ring, Tiffen 72mm Circular Polarizer. There is a lot of glass to shoot through. Exposure is 5 seconds, F22. All braced on the banaster of my porch.

The adjustment steps are levels, selective golor, levels, brightness and contrast, curves, hue & saturation, curves, selective color, gradient mixer, USM, levels, and USM. I just kept playing until it looked how I wanted.
