nikon sb-800 flashes

I'm looking to get the look of something you would see in a transworld sk8 mag, the 3d look. I shoot action sports, trying to get into shooting stills also. Anyone use the 800's?

Thanks.
Derek

Not sure exactly what you mean by "the 3D look." Do you have an example photo maybe?

I've used the SB-800s a bit, and a friend of mine shoots with them daily. They're perfect for sports photography, especially if you use a few of them placed strategically. They can either work on full auto with remote wireless TTL metering or you can dial in intensity manually. If you shoot with a Nikon, they're really the only choice short of hauling some Normans or Lumedynes with full battery packs into a shoot. If you're on a budget, you can use the SB-600 as a wireless slave, it's just not as powerful as the 800 and can't work as a master. Hope this helps...

nah, I'm talking about photos that have slaves set up that gives it that pop. I was planning on using the on board flash and the 800 as a slave.

Thanks.

If you use the on-board flash as commander it lose most of it´s power, leaving it nearly dead due to the energy drain of sending the information to the slave flash through visible preflashes.

In my opininon you should get the SB800 and reach to get the 600 as slave. If not, try a couple of Sigma EF 500 DG Super. They are cheaper and good unless you mix them with the Nikons.

Hope it helps!

They can be set to remote and slave mode and they are i-ttl (or compatible). It´s a safe bet you won´t need pocket wizards.

But there are some interferences between the Nikons and Sigmas. You have a D70 so (like me with the D70s) we are set to have just one commander channel (was it Channel 3 group 1? i haven´t wach it for a while). I don´t know for sure if with a different channel (D200 has three to choose from) the problems would be fixed. Worth to find out. But remember to try them before.

I bought into the pricey Nikons before discovering the Sigmas so it would be great to hear some opinions about them!

Alright, so I got the 800 but theres a delay in the signal it takes like a second and a half too long. I'm using the 800 as a slave how do I turn up the shutter speed on the flash.

Thanks.
Derek
