“Nikon has a new image processing engine (maybe called EXPEED 3?) that will be able to deliver some insane frame rates and video capabilities”.

Who knows what the reality will be - but whatever may come, it is an interesting time with Panasonic, Sony, Canon and Nikon apparently all working on new video capabilities. Unlike some of the others, Nikon has no high end video camera to protect, so possibly they will endow their SLRs with capabilities the others would withhold to protect their more expensive cameras?

Does Nikon rumors have a rating system like Canon Rumors? (farfetched, plausible, good chance, concrete, etc)

I don’t know if there is any probability ranking or not. I use video cameras for video because I find them far easier to use than SLRs, but four years ago when the D3 came out, I switched to Nikon from Canon for stills (because the ability of the Nikon focus tracking algorithm for what Canon refers to as “erratic motion” is a lot better than Canon), and I’d love to have a camera with the current focusing and low light capabilities of the D3s, but with more MP. If it is also capable of excellent video, so much the better. Obviously this could simply be hype, or completely unwarranted, but comments like this (insane frame rates and video capabilities) do tweak my curiosity. I’m from the manual everything era, and the incredible progress I see today is fascinating.

The guys on camera sites watch these things and post them - this site also seem interesting, http://www.eoshd.com/

Thats assuming they care about that market. If you hang out on the photography forums, photographers are upset that any R&D is being put into video. The impression I get is that Nikon is more of a photo company and does not want to burn bridges with its photographers.

Yes, you are right, and I don’t understand why they care because having video available does not detract from the photographic capabilities of the camera. I started as a newspaper photographer in the 1960s/70s and just discovered video a few years ago because it was bundled in still cameras. I quickly discovered the limitations of these cameras (and tripods), and I love the new creative avenues video offers. While a few people do grumble about having video capabilities in their Canon and Nikon cameras, quite a number have picked up on it and are delving into your world. I think it has increased the demand for Canons, and I assume the same would be true for Nikon if they can offer functions not available elsewhere. If Panasonic does offer faster lenses, there are occasions when cameras like the GH2 become especially handy because we can carry one small, lightweight camera and cover both stills and video.

They were the first to put HD video in a photography camera... remember the D-90?!

This rumor talks about the chip being used in a mirrorless camera a few days after they quoted Nikon execs saying that their customers haven't been asking them for a mirrorless camera in their lineup, so I wouldn't put too much stock in it.
