Nikon Lens Recommendations?

Hi,

I have a DVX100b, a RedRock M2 35mm lens adapter and I'm trying to find a good but affordable Nikon lens that'll work well in low light. I've been looking at this Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF lens (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...kenrockwellcom) and this Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF lens (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...kenrockwellcom). Which would you guys recommend, or is there another I'm overlooking that would be better but still somewhat affordable? Also, one thing I find myself getting confused on is the lenses that are AF and MF as most everything I've seen has been AF. Which do I need, or does it make much of a difference?

Thanks for the help!

The 1.4 is what i have and is the best you will get for low light. They make a 1.2 but word is the adapter doesnt focus well with it.

I chose the 1.8 because it was sharper than the 1.4, but sometimes I wish I had the 1.4 to squeeze out a tad more light performance.

No problems using the AF lenses -- just don't get a G lens.

As far as other focal lengths, I'm a big fan of my Nikon 105mm F2.5 lens. I use it a LOT, almost more than my 85mm F1.8 lens.

if you are unfamiliar with what kind of lenses and speeds will work best for you then you should volunteer to help out a local still photographer for a day (preferrably Nikon based) and that will help you develop some clear ideas about what you want in a lens.

We used that exact 50mm on a lot of our redrock shots- works pretty good.

The AFs might breathe a bit, so if you aren't pulling focus, I'd gaff it down. But if pulling focus, MEH! ...not much you can do about the AF breathing.

The primes (manuals) are much better way to go with a DOF 35, but then they are more expensive usually.

TIP: When using the DOF adapters for a serious shoot, look at rentals on the lenses- you can get a kick a$$ set of Nikon MF or better primes for 35 mm adapters and rental kits usually have a good range of everything from wide to long: 28, 50, 108 mm etc. Lots of posts on here for rental houses.
