Nikon Flash With Canon Camera?

I currently own a digital rebel but am looking at purchasing a D200 within the next couple of months. I would however, like to start trying some off camera lighting well before that. Anyone know if an SB-800 will work with my digital rebel or should I just leave the $400 on my credit card until I upgrade?

Thanks,
Allen

Thanks Vincent. Unfortunately it became a moot point for me about 10 hours ago. The nice people at VISA raised my limit yesterday so... Today I'm the proud new owner of a D200 and an SB-800 (just wish I could have afforded some more glass). I am curious though, did you use the flash in the hotshoe, wired, or wireless for this shot? I asked at the local camera shop and they recommended against mixing brands (hotshoe anyways).

Thanks again,
Allen

I've attached it to the hot shoe, it's working well, but only in manual mode (for ex u can't use the light meter integrated in the flash)...

In stumbling around a(n excellent) site recommended by a fellow DVXuser...

...I found another warning against using a Nikon flash on a Canon camera as it could damage either or both. It's about six paragraphs in. I'm glad you haven't had any problems mixing yours.

It would be interesting to see if others have had the same luck as you or have been less fortunate. Hopefully they've had the same luck.
