Nikon D's Are In

Hey Super8... thanks for letting us know why we don't get one. (sold out again... D'oh!)

Boy I sure hope Nikon gets the message on this deal... I don't know how long demand can outpace supply w/o the manufacturer getting the point. Seriously... it shouldn't be any big deal Super8... I was just kidding. Okay I wasn't actually kidding, but this means that other cam shops should have some in now.
 
Dang! I just ordered and paid for one -- but B&H sent an email notice:

"We regret to inform you that due to a system error the ordered merchandise is not in stock."

Oh well, off to the office depot for some presentation binders ...
 
No, they're still in. At least when I just went there they are. As of 9:51 AM (Mountain Standard Time). I ordered just one for myself, just to clarify so you guys don't think I am hoarding them. I thought about buying a bunch just to ensure that the community would get them but I figured notifying everyone was the best way to avoid trouble. I now have two screens on the way to me (the Nikon D and another one). Now I can have my own little shootout. :D

Well I wish I could say I was going to resell them or something...but it is just not the case. I already had others in backorder. This morning I got an email from B&H Photo. I had put a request a month ago to inform me when they were in.

I'm building 15+ adapters for fellow film shooters around my area. It just so happens that my adapter also uses the F3 screen.

As I has said about a month ago...when I called Nikon a rep told me that the screens are still being produced and they are NOT being discontinued.
 
Sorry, I wasn't trying to take a shot at you or anything Super8. I just meant that I only ordered one because I only needed one. It's none of my business how many you order or what you do with them. Sorry if my earlier post came off the wrong way. That's cool you are making them for other shooters. Good luck. Sharing any plans? I'll post mine when I'm done, but I'm still working on the design.

Edit: I got the same email, which is why I got mine so quick. Thought I'd let others know if they weren't signed up for the notification. Also, if Nikon is still continuously producing these why doesn't B&H just order more of them to keep them in stock? They see that these sell out within minutes of putting them up? I would take it as a good business idea to keep stocking these. I realize they deal in MUCH higher end inventory (and much more profitable) than these small screens. I just think it would be a smart move to keep selling these in bulk.

by the way...i was talking to someone at B&H backorder department and he was amazed that the screen sold out within minutes. I told them what they are being used for and there is a high demand for these. He said he would try to put in a request to beef up the next order from Nikon
 
He said he's building 15 of them for his local film buddies... so I guess he's still 5 short.

I'm seriously not going to sweat it though... as Super8 said... surely Nikon will step up to meet the demand. Why wouldn't they?
 
hmmmm- he said he "just placed an order for 10". Ho hum, I guess my fear was someone would go snatch them all up and then go into making adapters for sale. If that was anyones intention that would kind of suck, then again it is a free market economy and perhaps I should censor my communistic leanings. :)

Not saying that is what Super 8 is doing, if he had that many on backorder then thats totally cool.

...and just so many conflicting stories from Nikon- I spoke with a guy in their parts center and he tells me that they are no longer manufactured, then this happens... Hopefull the guy I talked to was wrong.

And in a related story, last night I spent close to 1.5 hours cleaning out the dust that was trapped in my D screen/condneser. Clean it- re-assemble, check for dust...and NO GO. More dust! Repeat and repeat. I'm sorry, but I am starting to hate this fuc*ing screen :Drogar-Sick(DBG):

Well since they are going for around a $100 bucks a pop off ebay...I'd turn them around S8 that's some serious coin! And to see they *use* to be around market value in around the first of the month.

Ok...here we go again. FIRST and foremost...my response to this quote and others is NOT in a pissed pissed off mood to any comments made. Just stating the facts. I came to DVXuser from DVinfo in Jan2005...in my search to make one of the famous 35mm adapters. I have searched high and low for parts to create my perfect 35mm DOF adapter. I've spent over $2k in parts...mainly adapter rings and macro lenses...I've experimented with every type of GG screen available...

Last year I bought a Nikon D screen and I fell in love with it...it was the perfect screen for MY adapter. I started showcasing my adapter around town with my fellow filmmakers.....I've let filmmakers borrow my lense for their own project....Meanwhile perfecting the distances of the filter rings and trying to find out the perfect combination of macro lenses...perfect casing closure....

Finally I came to an end with the project. I told my friends..."if you want an adapter, I will make you one..you pay for the parts, but I'm not lending mine no more!"

Two months ago I had multiple requests for 6 adapters....then I made my first music video...
word got out of the the adapter and I got 9 more requests for them......

I've been waiting for a while for B&H to send me my first order of 6...and hopefully now I got 10 more on the way. Am I making money...nope. My business is production, not adapters. I don't think I could handle the crap people throw at you for making the adapter work with this camera and not that one...for visible vignetting around the border, for grain issues, for not having set dates for release...etc.etc. Heck I am ine of the first 50 in line for the Guerilla 35...I've been working on mine and waiting on theirs!

Edweirdo: I think the thread you started was incredible...if you had censored it...who knows where many would be...desperate for an adapter. This community feeds off from people like you that are out there probing and trying.

What about my plans....I've been promising my plans for a long time...yet, I have not made them public. Why? not because I want to keep them all for myself. The reason is that I was trying to make it perfect. My plans will be exact and easy..no room for experimentation. There will be a video and a graphical plan. I promise that if you EXACTLY buy my parts list...you will get the same results. Again, if you don't like my results...then don't buy the parts. But if you can screw a couple of adapters...then you are in.

There will be no need to saw off or sand PVC pipes, play around with glue etc. etc. I like PVC pipes...but I don't have the patience to do so...and Home Depot and Lowes personnel have no clue when you ask for help! And I am not knocking down your adapter Edweirdo...I think it looks awesome...yet I don't have the time to make one like yours...I just like simple stuff...eventhough your plans look simple..mine will be idiot proof; just maybe a tad more expensive to get the parts.

Yeah I know...I bought two screen within the last month...both were garbage...One was for 75 bucks and the other for 115 bucks...but it is the price you pay for getting them.

By the way, I placed my order and came to DVXuser to make an announcement that the screen were available...but I was beaten to the punch.
 
Hey sorry guys. I didn't mean to make this a war. I know it's difficult to hear someone say 'Hey, I just bought 10 of them' and not have some negative thoughts about it. I assumed that MANY people were on that email notification list and I was really surprised that I got one myself. I just came and posted to help out those who weren't aware. As others have said, it is a free market society.

In defense of Super8 (not that he needs defending) but the act of him talking to the B&H backorder guy did all of us a favor. If B&H is aware of how much these screens are sought after then maybe they'll stock them more regularly and it will help out the whole community. I think if others pressure B&H it will get the screens in more regularly. I think we all share a sort of kinship here, and I think that's why this place works so well. For the most part, we DO want to help each other out. So, let's keep helping each other out and making this place great. I've learned a ton here and I am SO glad that everyone is trying to make adapters. I NEVER EVER EVER thought I would be able to make an adapter. But Ed's post helped me understand the concepts and many other posts helped me refine the design. However we manage to get shallow DOF, I think it's great that it's being worked on, collectively, from so many different parts of the world.

No war here. I understand. Maybe I should have kept it to myself. It retrospect I might have come out as gloating, but I just was extremely excited of getting the screens...

I think the real issue here is trying to get a straight answer from Nikon (which by the way they are not too helpful if you don't tell them why you want their screen and for what application...if you tell them you are using it for anything else other than their cameras, they will hang up on you and say they do not support that application..CLICK!)

When I heard from Edwierdo that the screens were no longer being made I was pissed off with B&H for taking my original order of 6. After calling them and giving them a piece of my mind, they said they would research why their status shows as backordered and would get back to me. In the meantime, i called Nikon and got the affirmation they still made the screens. A week later, B&H told me that they had contacted the supplier (Nikon) and the screens were in fact being made. Someone had suggested that maybe B&H had some stock inventory...but the fact that B&H got a fresh order of screens, tell me that Nikon does make them and has them.
