From what I gather it's brand new, so making a D40 comparison would be hard to do, and I doubt anyone has got their hands on it yet, tho I could be wrong. That link provides you with info on it, did you read it?
I guess I don't understand your question. Looks like a suped-up D80, so by default it's stronger than the D40, since the D80 was the answer to the D40. Make sense? Looks like stronger saturation and some bells and whistles from the D300 thrown in.
Is it me or are all these camera numbers getting confusing? Common sense would mean a D80 is a superior camera to the D60, no? Wouldn't you think the number should just go up? Or am I being petty? It gets on my nerves. When they released the D40...AFTER the D50, D70 and D80....annoying.
I dont know about it being a suped up d80 - only one control wheel for iris/shutter and I would assume you are stuck with AIS lenses if you want autofocus, as is with the d40.
As for the D80, it is now what most people would consider old. It is bigger and has more pro features, so I don't see the D60 as a replacement to the D80.
As jdajda was trying to say, like the D40 and D40x...the D60 will require AF-S or AF-I lenses to auto-focus.
And I think I would think of it as a suped up D40x. We don't know for sure, but with it's release coming after the D300 & D3...one would assume it is using a lot of the same software/rendering poopoo (<<<technical terms) as their big brothers. The info on Nikons website has a bunch of stuff listed that is not included in D40x.
I think a lot of people wanted the D60 to be more than Nikon planned for it to be. It is a higher MP intro Consumer grade DSLR. If you want pro features you have to pay the pro prices. Just like with our beloved DVX/HVX.
That said I hope they do replace the D80 with something newer, with the same big brother poopoo that is speculated to be in the D60 plus keep it's other pro features (top lcd, extra option wheel, CLS, internal AF motor, ect). I would jump the D40 ship in a heartbeat if that happened. Until then, I'm going to sail a little longer.
Thanks Dan - AF-S or AF-I (not AIS as I stated) - I've been awake for too long today. FWIW there are some pretty sweet AF-S lenses so its not the worst thing in the world to be stuck using them.
The main difference with the D60 seems to be better handling of the shadows and highlight in regards to detail, as well as better saturation control. I agree though that this is NOT a replacement to the D80, it is still an entry level camera in terms of the body and controls.
Glad to help, and I hear ya on the AF-S lenses. I would freaking love to have a 80-200 f/2.8 VR. The issue I have is you can't use any AF primes on the D40 and I don't want to buy an out of date D80.....so I wait. Of course now we will have the 60mm AF-S, so I hope that pattern continues with other focal lengths, and adds VR.
well some primes would be nice... I've got the 17-200 VR lens and it just rocks when you've got enough light. I wouldnt hesitate to buy a d80 though, just cause there something newer doesnt mean it takes bad pictures. Heck I have a d70 and dont plan on upgrading anytime soon.
I don't like the way they name them. D50(1) D40(2) D40x(2.5) D60 (3). Down and then way up. And Canon had a camera named EOS D60. Who do they think they are?
