hi everyone,i was watching the nikon d40 commercial, and they where showing people holding up big prints,is that possible with only 6MP

I've printed 13x19 with my D100 with no visible loss of quality. I imagine I could go up to poster size with only slight problems.

The art school answer is of course. My teacher used to love printing ginormoius prints with his dv resolution cell phone camera.
In terms of commercial world:
usually you will want to print no lower than 180 dpi so with a 6 megapixel camera you should be able to print somewhere around 17x11. This of course can vary if you are shooting at a very clean iso and if you have a very sharp lens and a good exposure. ive blown my rebel xt (8mp) up to 16x24 with great results.

Are you sure your name isn't ego productions? Maybe take a step back with the tone, friend.

I assure you I have a very demanding eye for quality, and also that I never went to art school (whatever that means). I also assumed from the original post that he wasn't particularly going to be doing commercial work with a $300 D40. But I suppose you'd tell him he should hold out for a Hasselblad.

to clear things up a bit im gona mostly use it for rock band concerts in bars and such,so idk will the 6mp be enough, mostly gona be used on their website

I didn't mean to get your panties up in a bunch. I wasn't even responding to your post and I wasn't even bagging on my teacher, he was probably the most knowlegable teacher I had in art school. My point was that there is no right way of going about it but if you want to go along with a commercial standard then 180dpi is it. I mentioned that I printed 16x24 prints on my rebel xt this is above what the commercial standard but you can still get very nice results. Oh, just so you know I think a D40 is totally acceptable for commercial if you have the proper lenses and lighting. I use my rebel xt for commercial (despite the megapixel difference they are on the same level) Please don't be so presumtious when responding to peoples posts, I don't even know why you responded negativly to my post we pretty much said the same thing about what size it can be blown up too.

wow i just read that you cant control the iso on the d40,that sucks.so what can i get with all the important manual controls that is $500

Even my Nikon D200 has auto ISO. It does manual too. Sometimes manual is not a bad idea if your like me and one day set it to 1000 ISO then forget to change it!!!

So who does the "blow up", you in Photoshop or the printing shop?
Meaning: when the cameras resolution isn´t high enough for the aspired printing size, who does the scaling?

Up to your printer, really, but since most places are going to charge you some pretty hefty servicing fees for messing with your files, it's usually best to go to them with print-ready mechanicals. That way you also have a pretty good idea of what you're getting ahead of time (unless they're doing a proof for you anyway).

The D70 offers manual controls, yes.
