nikon d screen blemish removal question.

I just bought a nikon d screen off of ebay. There's a slight blemish in the form of a clear smudge. Everything else is frosted.

I'm wondering if i would mess things up if I used 1000 grit powder to refrost the whole surface. Your thoughts and ideas would greatly appreciated.

Thanks

That would be a really bad idea in my mind. Take it and softly rub it with a microfiber cloth and brush it afterwards with a camera brush. If this doesn't work, contact your ebay seller and demand your money back.

def don’t try to re-sand it. You wont be able to get the grain as smooth as Nikon did when they made it.

My suggestion would be to try and clean it with an alcohol wipe. If it doesn’t come clean try it anyway. Some smears don’t show up when an image is projected on the D screen.

If it is seen on screen and you cant clean it, there’s not much else you can do but try and re-sell it.

Yes, do NOT re-grind the glass. that would be pointless, you might as well just get a clear microscope slide and grind that to 1000 grit if you want. but dont do that to the Nikon screen, it wont be the same size grit and your bound to have some imperfection. just try and clean it like Edwierdo said. dont do anything but that.

Also, the reason it looks clear is maybe that its an oil/grease mark. it might clean off easy.

DO NOT USE AN ALCOHOL WIPE!!!

Some screens have multiple layers and the liquid could get underneath. Follow my suggestions and like I said, if it doesn't work send it back to the person who sold it to you.:)

I agree that the alcohol wipe is risky. Start with the cloth ,and if that fails, stick to the least abrasive and dry methods. If none of those work then use the alcohol wipe as the last resort, using a very minimal amount of alcohol (air dry a little). I think that once a screen is marred in some way that it's useless, I had one very tiny tiny scratch on one I had and that's all it took for me to throw it into the trash. Personnaly....I find the Nikon D screens purchased off ebay a waste of money.

Some photo accessories should not be touched with alcohol yes, but I cleaned my D screen with an alcohol wipe with no problems. Its your screen and its up to you what to clean it with. I hope the smear comes clean.

And I will agree that used D screens off ebay are risky since the application we use it for requires 100% perfection. If it were used in an SLR like it was designed, a few nicks or smears here or there wont matter since its just a focusing/framing aid.

The problem is its the best place to find them. So the best thing you can do is ask alot of questions before bidding to make sure its still 100%

Hope you can sort it out. But this is exactly why I would not buy a lense from Ebay, I think its absolutely necessary to inspect any lense before buying.
