Nikkor 24-85mm lens

Any thought on a Nikkor 24-85mm f2.8-4 D IF Asperical lens? I already own 24mm, 28mm, 50mm, 135mm, 180mm and they are all primes. Sometimes I hate to bring all of those lens along when I could only bring a Nikkor 24-85mm f2.8 and a 80-200mm f2.8 lens instead of 5 lenses.

Any suggestions/opinions are welcome. I need some help making my decision.

Feel free to use what works best for you. I admit, the quality of primes with the added bonus of less weight is nice to have, but for some things having one or even three zooms (ie. usual combination of Nikon 17-35, 24-70, 80-200) is more beneficial if you've got to be quick or don't have the patience to swap lenses over and over again.

Of course, then there are issues with whether the zoom will perform as well as a prime for a certain shot, for instance, does the 24-85 zoom work as well at 85mm as the 85mm prime does? Bokeh difference? etc.

But that all depends on what kind of DP you are. Me, I don't worry too much about bokeh, that stuff is out of focus, why bother? But to a lot of people it does matter for the art of it. Same thing with zooms and primes, depending on the zoom, there could be flare issues, depending on the primes there could be ghosting or comma issues, and then there's always the situation where you need fast primes and are stuck no matter what.

That's kind of what makes questions like yours hard to answer. There's a lot to consider. I for one say you should use what you're happy with, if the zooms look good enough for you then just bring those along and leave the primes at home. I'd be happy with the 17-35, 24-70, and 80-200 because they're high quality zooms and I'd be able to use them in most situations. However, I personally would prefer to use high speed primes all the time just so I would have the option there if I needed it. That's just me being picky though. See? It all just depends.

Many thanks for the suggestion/opinions. I'm pretty sure that for filming a feature, I will use the primes more often then the zooms; however, a majority of my work now are events and I think for event, a couple of zooms will be much faster for me to capture those moments than swapping different primes. But I'm not sure about the quality of a 24-85mm lens or do I want to go with 17-35mm, 24-70mm, and 80-200mm. I also planned to buy a 80-200mm sometime in the future. The reason I am skipping the 17-35mm is because I'm afraid that at 17mm, the picture will be quite distorted and that's why I chose to go with a 24-85mm and then 80-200mm route.

Is that lens 2.8 all thru the zoom or is it a 2.8 - 4 lens.*That would make a huge difference. It doesn't look like its the same quality as the other 3 Nikon zooms as it is less than half the price. i would be wary.

If it's a 2.8-4 lens then don't touch it. I'd never want to be that slow at 85mm before even stopping down.
